Concepts of good and bad as individual perceptions

Thesis Statement: Within the novels, FIB and COADF, individual perceptions are riddled throughout. Between both works it can be seen that there is a contrast of setting to present these concepts however the effect of this is the same regardless of time and place. Which is clearly shown through the motif ritual throughout COADF but is not throughout FIB as the motif being the Whatsitsname offers many juxtaposing viewpoints, because of his origin being made up of people from identities conflicting with one other, posing a moral dilemma within his psyche (come back to this)
Thesis sentence 1: In both works, it can be seen that there is a contrast in setting to present the concepts on individual perception however the effect of this is the same through literary devices.
Topic sentence 1 Comp: Throughout COADF and FIB there continue to be multiple views of a situation presenting unreliable narrator tropes throughout the process showing that concepts of good and bad may stem from a belief that the person holds, like the Whatsitsname with his belief that all who commit crime deserve death or with those people in the Colombian town; some who believe it is okay for Santiago to die while others do not.
Topic Sentence 2 Cont: In COADF, one core idea being presented would be that of ritual where throughout the story many people know what is going to happen throughout the open community that they express their opinions which is not the case with FIB as it is a war-torn country with those who have differing ideals but are not allowed to present them.

Patterns: Those in Iraq who disappear either through being taken by the government due to 'terroristic' like behavior such as expressing their opinion while others are chastised by the community due to their beliefs and own perceptions of good and bad. For example, Faraj harasses a homeless man and others because of their lifestyle and his religion, the Whatitsname kills others based on the fact they are criminals, viewing it as a situation in black and white when it is more complex than that, or even through Hadi as he views the terrorists to be a part of daily life due to his belief that this is the status quo.
COADF: The Vicario Brothers openly state that they are going to kill Santiago, those in the town who refuse to stop them, those who want to stop them, the men viewing those in the whorehouse as people despite their unholiness to their religion while other women who are deemed pure as torn down for not being a virgin. The testimonies of those in town being down to those who believe in what is certain and what is not, this leans into the unreliable narrator trope as there are no definitive facts on the situation just the expressions of the townfolk.

(FIB with the monster and his victims, Angela and Bayardo love and hypocrisy of religion)
Thesis Statement: Both Gabriel Marquez, author of Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Ahmed Saadawi, author of Frankenstein in Baghdad, present different forms of intolerance and their effects on both the victims and the intolerant in their works. In both novels, it can be that the forms of intolerance stem from a belief or religion, however, it can be based on the woman disgraced in her community or the monster whose ideals become clouded in a moral dilemma with victims
Thesis one sentence: In both novels on a surface level it can be seen that the forms of intolerance stem from a religion or belief that the person, however, they take different routes to get to this place from a woman disgraced in her community to a monster whose ideal become clouded in moral dilemmas.

Topic Sentence 1 Cont: Unlike COADF, Frankenstein in Baghdad takes a different route with the intolerant, the Whatitsname going from tolerant of those on one side then becoming a rogue monster on the loose, showing that he is on both sides of the coin rather than just one.

Topic Sentence 2 Comp: These novels both align in the fact that a character through the intolerance of belief also has an underlying bias toward themselves, as Bayardo San Roman and the Whatitsname deem people unworthy by the fact that they perceive themselves to be worthy either by a virgin or to become a bringer of justice in some regard.

Patterns: The Whatitsname continues to kill no matter how insignificant the crime may be, putting himself on a pedal stool
Those in COADF effectively deemed Angela as a disgrace meanwhile those who are men have not been so righteous in the face of religion themselves.

Despite this, the honor of motif is presented through both sides the same as something they can not go back on and is presented throughout the work.

Patterns: Honor used as a motif: through the Whatsitsname (His struggle with moral dilemmas to upkeep his honor) and the Vicario Brothers (Having to do whatever it takes to upkeep their honor despite the hypocrisies through their actions), both of these uses correlate with one another however they are different in purpose.

COADF and FIB
(hadi being labeled as a Liar) (Santiago nasar's murder or i can do bayardo san roman not knowing angela is not a virgin)

Thesis Statement: The effects of not knowing in novels are notable, like the people not believing Hadi with his overt fantasy-like stories or through Santiago Nasar's murder with the bystander effect where individuals of the town do not provide any help to the victim when others people are involved in the picture. Both authors' decision to present the effects of not knowing through foreshadowing creates a real-life scenario in which the victims of the crimes being committed become the perpetrators.

Topic Sentence 1 Comp: In both novels, the effect of not knowing comes at a great cost as the fantasy stories that Hadi comes up with would foreshadow his untimely arrest for the crimes of the Whatitsname, despite the Whatitsname being real the officials and others have labeled Hadi a liar. The same could be said with Bayardo San Roman as he had made great sacrifices to be with Angela, thought to be a virgin which was a lie, this would undoubtedly foreshadow how the death of Santiago Nasar would die as the readers already know he is going to die but not from what. The effect of not knowing here causes a chain of reactions that would inevitably lead to Santiago Nasar's death.

Topic Sentence 2 Cont: The effect of not knowing is different in each case as the Whatitsname is only told by Hadi who is known for being a pathological liar which enables Saadawi to present this idea to be true while in COADF Marquez utilizes personal testimonies shows multiple sides of one story making it hard to distinguish fact from fabrication.

Patterns: Hadi not knowing his creation would come to life, the government not knowing of the Whatsitsname and blaming Hadi, and the people watching Hadi tell his story of the Whatitsname suspecting him to be the perpetrator despite the reader knowing the existence of the whatsitsname.
COADF: Multiple testimonies some being truthful while others lie, the Vicario brothers not knowing their honor had been taken from their sister, Bayardo not knowing that Angela was a virgin, the townsfolk not knowing the Vicario brothers actually had the guts to carry out the murder, Santiago Nasar not knowing he was going to be murdered.

(The children's blood quote as well as Santiago's scent that remained throughout the town)

Topic Sentence 2 Cont: Throughout Neruda's poem it can be seen that it is presenting a cycle of revenge while Marquez's work through tone and mood continues to tackle the societal norms placed on people such as women through imagery.

struggle of love, loneliness
can relate to angela and Bayardo san roman - this desire to shut them up with I like it when your quiet

Thesis Statement: Both Neruda and Marquez convey a struggle to be understood through different means, poetry and novel mediums, yet convey the unique struggles of love and loneliness through literary devices.

Topic Sentence 1 Comp: Through the struggles of love in both novels Angela and the Speaker experience loneliness when their partner is gone and through mood and imagery the reader sees how loneliness can invoke a desire to be with that person once more. - Nerudas "I Like It When You're Quiet"

Topic Sentence 2 Cont: The speaker in the poem does not want to be with the partner but changes once he imagines her dead, which is not the case for Angela as she desires Bayardo when she is outcasted from society, their tone changes when something occurs to them but is different because of the situation.

Patterns: The continued "As if" like the speaker is hyperventilating over the continued imagining of his partner's death, The speaker's rude tone toward the partner wanting them to be quiet.
COADF: Angela not wanting to marry Bayardo, the continuous writing of letters once she is outcasted, the imagery presented while she is going crazy
