Changing Women's Roles

Rebellious women, flappers, are trying to change the expectations for women by wearing shorter dresses and sporting shorter hair cuts. Flappers are making an attempt to change the views and visions of women of the 20s. These flappers are trying to show their independence and demand the same freedoms their male counterparts have. Flappers are now making it acceptable to drink and smoke in public and talk in ways that would have been considered vulgar and ruined reputations. Morals of this time are starting to loosen, but who knows how far the roles will actually stretch. Women's freedoms are still limited by double standards in dating because women are forced to be more strict in dating behavior. Women are fighting, but still seen as less than their male counterparts. In the workplace, new opportunities for jobs allow women to work in offices, factories, stores, and professions; shaping the wave of women from housewives to workers. The war has changed this for women though because most managers believe that men hold the upper hand in working rights. Women were feared as workers because they were still believed to be housewives.

Shuffle Along has launched a movement of succession around black culture. This musical is a comedy with songs that quickly became very popular. The show had many black performers spotlighted. These talented individuals started a trend of popularity among black performers, singers, actors, and musicians. Many singers and actors from the black community obtained roles in well known bands and productions on Broadway or in famous clubs. Jazz was created by musicians blending ragtime and blues into a new genre of music. The Creole Jazz Band traveled to Chicago leaving the footprint of jazz behind for people to fall in love with. Louis Armstrong popularized jazz through raw talent for the jazz style of music. Duke Ellington led his orchestra and the Cotton Club, leaving the white population that inhibited the club obsessed with this new genre of music. White culture started to take on the new music by dancing and going to clubs where jazz was being played. This music associated with black culture, broke down some racial barriers through unity of music.

After the war, Britain and France have to pay back the United States. Now this could have been much simpler for the two countries to do, except for raised taxes. Taxes on imports were raised to 60%, benefiting American businesses because the competition could not compete in terms of better prices. This hurt the two countries though since one way to pay reparations to the US was through imports from their country. Raising taxes forced France and Britain to call on Germany to pay them reparations. Germany itself was going through a rough patch with inflation. Germany could not make payments which upset the French troops. To avoid war, the Dawes Plan was created to help Germany and get the owed money back. The US paid Germany to pay Britain and France and then the other countries paid the US back. Britain and France were essentially paying America back with its own money though. The Dawes Plan further upset Britain and France because the Us was being paid instead of paying a large amount for the war. The US also benefited from Germany being defeated. Harding's friends also exposed information deeming Harding as an incapable president, ruining his reputation. The administration truly became corrupt when Harding's friends became wealthy through graft. Private oil set aside for the navy was transferred for internal government use. The oil was sold to different companies to benefit the government when the money gained was used to benefit Harding's friends.

Boom of the Economy

Automobiles forever changed the American economy. Now paved roads are must for the ever growing population of drivers travel on. Route 66 was created for people to move west from Chicago to California. By having a road going across the west, people were able to settle along Route 66 also instead of traveling all the way west. Automobiles helped create a large boom in business also. Gas stations and repair shops as well as entertainment and motels were built because of the easy access people had to travel. People in rural areas and cities could travel to the same places faster than ever before. The use of the railroad decreased with the invention of automobiles. People could travel more independently with cars and trucks would allow for easier and faster shipping. Gas was also cheap which allowed people to afford enough fuel for travel. Airplanes became a ready source of transportation also. Advancements were made from just cargo carrying planes to passenger planes able to make cross country flights. This also decreased railroad usage because flying across the country is faster than taking a plane across the country. Mail was able to be transported faster because airplanes can travel longer distances faster than cars or trains. The 20s also brought electricity. Instead of relying on gas, the cities and suburbs could use electricity to power homes and appliances. This was crucial for housewives making their lives easier allowing for more free time. Advertising also became a very large way of selling products. Slogans were used to entice consumers by triggering emotions that encouraged people to by the advertised product. Overall, people were making more money in the 1920s and now had more outlets provided to spend the extra money easily. Installment plans were a large reason for downfall. This plan which was basically a tab so people could buy items without actually having to pay encouraged more people to buy products with the thought of paying the debt off in the future. This lulled citizens into a false sense of security that the market would never crash or have a major downfall. Some businesses did not prosper in the decade that seemed to be extremely prosperous also. Farmers faced problems with producing too much food and having too much food on the market driving down prices. Some other companies also had strikes because of working hours or union problems, causing the business to be unsuccessful.
