This poem talks about Sylvia's feelings about being "vertical" instead of "horizontal." She says she wants to lie down horizontally (die) so she can be more useful in death by letting her body be used by the flowers and trees to grow. She says, "And I shall be useful when I lie down finally." By doing this, she would become one with nature. The reason she wants this is because she is jealous of how beautiful the flowers are. She also craves the attention and appreciation they receive.

This poem talks about that in today's society, "we move in jade and cease with garnet," so we care about wealth more than many things. We get so into wealth and don't realize death will eventually take us away. Death is destined to come. Also, you cannot escape time. We should care about the experiences we will have in this world because we never know when we'll have our last breath.

Mood Reflection
The mood of the poem is sadness and misery. I feel this way because the fact that death will eventually come creates a sad aura. I feel misery because we care about wealth more than most things and we will stay miserable that way. In this poem, I understand that caring about wealth isn't as important as living your life to its fullest. So I make sure I do anything I enjoy, with no regrets.

Mood Reflection
The mood of this poem is tranquility and a slight hint of jealousy. I feel this because she discusses how she would prefer the peaceful life of a flower. She also discusses how she envies the flower's beauty, and how appreciated they are. I connect to this because I also feel unappreciated in life sometimes, and I can understand her wanting the praise and adoration of others.

This poem is about Plath teaching all women a lesson by speaking through Eva (Eve). She tells them they have made progress with women's rights, but they should not stop. She tells them they should strive for more and know there's a possibility of something much better. This is supported when she says, "Clocks cry: stillness is a lie, my dear; The wheels revolve, the universe keeps running. (Proud you halt upon the spiral stair)." She says staying still and stopping halfway is a lie because everything else in the universe keeps moving, so women need to move on with it.

This poem talks about that Plath will be "only truthful" even if the truth hurts. She's not being evil or "cruel," instead she's giving people honesty. People tend to turn to people who won't be truthful to them. Turning to someone who hasn't lied to you or wronged you is better than someone who hasn't done neither of them. She's also accepted the fact that whatever has been done or said to her in the past, she can't escape from it -- it's all the truth.

This poem talks about a woman Plath meets who is a prostitute that is sick of being used by men. She talks about how much the prostitute hates her job. She then goes on to describe the way she looks by pointing out her bruises and her scars. Finally, she describes meeting her and feeling that they aren't as different as people may think they are. The meaning of this poem is that Plath feels she is being "prostituted" (used) in real life. This is supported when she says, "Mere bruit of her takes our street until every man, Red, pale or dark, Veers to her slouch." This shows she believes every man eventually use her like they use the prostitute, either in her career or in her relationships.

Tone Analysis
The tone in this poem seems to be exhaustion. The prostitute in the poem sounds like she has given up. She sounds like she has given up on men, and has decided men will always mistreat her. She also looks physically exhausted, she has dirt on her face and does not take good care of herself.

The process of pushing through can be difficult, but it will be worth it at the end. There's a "flame" inside them that keeps them going. Even if they weren't innocent anymore, they could still strive to do better and try to be good people.

This poem is about Plath (being a solipsist) talking about all the things she controls. She talks about being able to control things like the weather and people. She also mentions people surrounding her are only there because she wanted them to be, but they are not real people with real feelings. This is supported when she says, "I Know you appear Vivid at my side, Denying you sprang out of my head, Claiming you feel." I believe this poem is about Plath being in a great mood. She feels the day is going her way, but she decides to exaggerate it to get her point across.

The place she is driving through is a neighborhood and everything looks fake (constantly seeing the same houses and trees). Then, they go to a "sea resort," which means mental hospital. She sees the patients at the hospital and how fake their smiles are as well as the plants there that are made of rubber. Nurses would take care of them but then they'd eventually have to go back home to their families and live their lives.

This poem is about the time Plath visited Grantchester Meadows. In this poem she speaks about how beautiful the country is. She admires the simplicity and beauty of country life. However, she makes sure to point out how there are also negatives, and how things could go wrong. This is shown when she says, "Hands laced, in a moony indolence of love—Black-gowned, but unaware How in such mile air The owl shall stoop from his turret, the rat cry out." In this stanza she describes an owl eating a rat (the cycle of life). She uses this to remind readers that nature is beautiful, but also as a harsh reality.

Poem Type
This poem is a pastoral poem. Pastoral poems are poems about romanticizing nature. This is significant because it shows Plath's connection and love for nature. A characteristic shown is the romanization of country life by someone who lives in the city. Additionally, Plath describes the beauty of nature by talking about its beautiful colors, and how they blend together like a watercolor painting.

This poem is based on the art piece "Conversation Among the Ruins." This poem is about a destructive relationship between a man and a woman. Their relationship was described as being in ruins. This is portrayed by the ruins in the background of the painting. Additionally, this couple is described as being in different eras (which represents them being on different pages). This is shown when she says, "While you stand heroic in coat and tie, I sit Composed in Grecian tunic and psyche-knot." This shows the woman is from ancient Greece while the man is from a more recent era. Overall, this poem describes Plath's relationship with her husband after he "ruined" everything and left their relationship in "ruins."

This poem talks about a woman who seems to be Plath according to critics. The woman feels as if she's "perfected" or there's no more room in her life left for her to grow. Her feet say, "We have come so far, it is over" and this means they have been given the ability to testify how far they have carried her and how relieved they feel since they're done carrying her. When it says, "The moon has nothing to be sad about," this means the moon is used to seeing death because that's what she stares down upon everyday. The woman feels like there is no more she can do, so she basically takes her life.

This poem talks about how Plath feels about her husband's mistress, Assia Weevil. When Plath says, "Of something beautiful, but annihilating," she means that she may be beautiful, but that could be dangerous. It can destroy the wife because her husband is cheating on her. She's obviously hurt because of her husband's cheating, but this poem focuses on how Assia (another woman) ruined her marriage. She compares Medusa to Assia by saying, "Your first gift is making stone out of everything." She's referring to an allusion (Medusa) because Medusa was fooling people with her beauty and turning them into stone which is not that different from what Assia did -- becoming the mistress of a married woman's husband. Plath says Assia is her competition and rival in winning her husband's heart.
