This law insures that all individuals with disabilities will receive some form of special education according to their disabilities. With this law, we can also find the definition of Special Education.

Special Education is defined as "specially designed instruction, at no cost to a student's parents, that meets the student's unique needs in school."

IDEA is split into 4 parts. They are named Parts A through D.
Parts B and C name who qualifies for an IDEA education. Here it lists that all students with a disability, from the ages of 3-21 years old, must receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE).

IDEA also has 6 principles that it operates by. These are as follows;
- Zero reject: IDEA will never reject a student.
- Nondiscriminatory evaluation: IDEA will require schools to evaluate students fairly to determine if they have a disability and then find out what kind and how extensive.
- Appropriate education: IDEA require schools to provide individualized education for each student based on evaluation and augmented by related services and supplementary aids and services.
- Least restrictive environment: IDEA requires schools to educate students with disabilities alongside students without disabilities to the maximum extent.
- Procedural due process: a rule providing safeguards for students against schools actions, including a right to sue schools in court.

Those 4 goals include:

- Equal opportunity: This means that everyone with a disability has an equal chance to be successful in school.
- Full participation: This means that all students with disability part take in a general curriculum just like everyone else.
- Independent Living: This means that the student has some input into what they are doing and how they decide to live.
- Economic Self-sufficiency: This means that students are able to work at a job and excel at it with their education.

Along with these goals and results, there are also seven core elements of Special education. They are as follows:

- High Expectations
- Diversity and Cultural Justice
- Progress
- Research-Based Practices
- Inclusion
- Self-determination
- Partnerships with families, based on trust

This law gave funding to states to provide elementary and secondary education programs to students who may suffer economically and for those who fall under IDEA as well.

ESEA has 6 principles that it follows. These are:

- Assessments (statewide assessments)
- Alternate standards for students with cognitive disabilities.
- Universal design for learning and accommodation. 
- Measures of interim progress
- State-defined Alternate Diploma
- Teacher and Leader Quality

This means that over 7 million students have a disability that needs some sort of accommodation.

For about half of those students, their disability will be either a Special Learning Disability or Speech or Language impairment. The other half will include groups of students who have other health impairments, Autism, intellectual disability, and more. 

As we stated before, these students can be anywhere between the ages of 3-21 years old. This is because IDEA ensures that they will receive a FAPE.

Alongside students with disabilities, is a different kind of exceptional student. This includes students who are gifted and talented. However, these students are not included in the IDEA framework but instead have their own law and regulations.

This act helps people with severe disabilities, and rehabilitation, to keep and maintain their employment. This works in two ways. At age 16, the person receives work evaluation and financial aid to receive job training and job locator services. Then a person with severe disabilities, who is a student, may enroll in supported employment programs.

Next, the Technology-Related Assistance to Individuals with Disabilities Act, also known as the Tech Act, grants funds to states so that they can provide technology assistive devices to people with disabilities, especially students.

Finally, Section 504 and Americans with Disabilities Act are two Antidiscrimination Laws enacted to protect those with disabilities from being judge solely on the fact of their disability.
