About The Dragon Boat Festival

1. Time and importance:

The Dragon Boat Festival is held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year.

It is a summer festival to bid farewell to the five plague gods and drive away plagues.

Along with the New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and other festivals, it is an important traditional festival in the cultural circle of Chinese characters. It is one of the four major Chinese festivals and the first Chinese festival to be selected as a world intangible cultural heritage.

2. Origin:

According to widespread legend, Qu Yuan, the patriotic poet of Chu State, committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on this day. Later, in memory of Qu Yuan, some people called it Poet's Day.

3. Seven customs of the Dragon Boat Festival:

① Dragon boat racing:

After Qu Yuan was thrown into the Miluo River, residents built boats to salvage Qu Yuan's body in the river, and this evolved into a dragon boat race.

② Eating Zongzi:

According to legend, after Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, local residents wrapped glutinous rice in bamboo leaves and threw it into the river in order to prevent the fish and shrimp in the river from eating Qu Yuan’s body. This has become a modern habit of eating Zongzi.

③ Standing eggs:

The yang energy is the strongest on the Dragon Boat Festival. If you can stand the eggs up at noon, it means that you will have good luck and fortune in the coming year.

④ Hanging mugwort:

In the past, in order to drive away poison and avoid evil, people would hang mugwort and calamus at their door. According to legend, mugwort and calamus are both sacred objects that can drive away evil and avoid evil.

⑤ Sachet:

Sachet was a lucky thing in the past, and wearing a sachet was to protect oneself from evil things.

⑥ Drink realgar wine:

It is said that realgar wine can resist epidemics. Because realgar wine is rich in minerals, its blend in rice wine can also be regarded as a medicine. May 5^th every year is Children’s Day, also known as Tango no Sekku in Japanese. It’s the final day of Golden Week [GW], a series of public holidays in Japan. Tango no Sekku, also known as Ayame no Sekku, has its origins in ancient China, specifically in the Yin-Yang philosophy. “Tango” [端午] means “beginning of horses” in the Chinese zodiac calendar, referring to the fifth month. In ancient China, there was a custom of purifying on days when odd numbers overlap.

In Japan, during the Edo period, Tango no Sekku emerged as a counterpart to the elegant and refined Girls’ Day festivities [Hina Matsuri]. It gained popularity among the samurai class from the Muromachi period onwards. Originally, Tango no Sekku involved prayers for purification using iris leaves, which were likened to brave swords, primarily celebrated as a festival for boys. Later, based on the belief that carp that successfully swam upstream turned into dragons, it became a day to pray for the healthy growth and success of boys. This led to the tradition of displaying koinobori (carp streamers) and decorating with May dolls [Gogatsu Ningyo]. Koinobori consist of a spinning top, arrow wheels, streamers, and carp figures [koi], symbolizing various auspicious meanings.

Yin-Yang philosophy: A concept in ancient Chinese philosophy representing the dual nature of things.

Golden Week [GW]: A series of public holidays in Japan that typically falls in late April to early May.

Tango no Sekku: Boys’ Festival or Children’s Day in Japan, celebrated on May 5^th.

May dolls: Dolls displayed during the Boys’ Festival in May, representing historical and legendary figures.

At the top of the koinobori, the spinning top symbolizes the presence of boys in households, while the arrow wheels below resemble arrow feathers, symbolizing purification from evil spirits. The streamers below are colored according to the Five Elements theory, representing wood, fire, metal, water, and earth. By symbolizing the five elements that compose the world, they act as talismans against evil spirits. Originally, only black carp [kuro] represented the eldest son. Later, red carp [hi] appeared during the Meiji period, with black carp representing the father and red carp representing the children.

During the Meiji period, Children’s Day, along with other traditional festivals, ceased being a public holiday. However, after World War II, when new holidays were established, May 5^th, one of the traditional festival dates, was designated as Children’s Day. It aims to honor children’s personalities regardless of gender and to promote children’s happiness while expressing gratitude to mothers. Similar to the Girls’ Day festivities during Hina Matsuri, Tango no Sekku has evolved over time to become a day of expressing gratitude to parents while also wishing for the healthy growth of children.

This is a virtual musical and culinary cultural feast centered around the 4Cs (Compare & Contrast / Comprehension / Creativity / Connection). We use music to weave our beautiful memories, and food to evoke our shared emotions and connect our stories. Below is the menu of performances by CTAS students for this event. We are also honored to invite our special guest to join us.

During the presentations, CTAS students will share their reflections and feelings from comparing and contrasting our exchanges with you.

The students will also use musical performances to evoke and flashback our shared memories and stories.

Each group of CTAS students has also created a "virtual fusion dish combining Taiwanese and Japanese elements" (though they might look strange and a bit scary as AI-generated food), showcasing their “creativity “ to symbolize the integration and combination of the two countries.

The core value of this performance is to echo the central design of our four-month mini course: compare and contrast.
