Children usually shared rooms with other children, and they lived near the factories. They were overworked in the harsh conditions in the factories, from running machines to spinning cloth. The government had not set strict working regulations, and children often received deadly diseases from their jobs. They often lost fingers, and those working in the mines had difficulty breathing.

Most children mainly women would not receive many other opportunities to succeed outside of the textile corporations. Many had no other way to earn a living. Children were also given room and board which often attracted them more than the salaries. Also many families needed the money that their children brought home.

Children were preferred to adults, since they were small they could fit into small places which adults could not. Children were also paid a lot less (10-20 percent) of what an adult would earn for the same job. Children often worked longer and harder hours than adults did, since there were no laws protecting them. Businesses thought that they were benefiting children by preventing them from starving.

When Child labor laws began to develop and why?

In the 1800s workers often striked against factories, however their protests were not very successful. Then later in the 1900s lawmakers started to make laws which protected the workers from the long and harsh work. The US congress passed some laws in 1918 and 1922, however the Supreme Court declared them both unconstitutional. In 1924 the states also proposed an end to child labor, however the states did not approve this.

In 1938 the Fair Labor standards act set a limit on child labor and how long children could work. Through this law, the well-being and education of children is ensured. Nowadays there is a limit of how long children under the age of 18 can work. Also due to human rights and advances in technology, children do not have to work in harsh conditions.
