President Obama relies on a series of semi-colons to connect shorter phrases that all start with "to..." and when he does this, it emphasized the impact that Senator Kennedy had throughout his life. When the audience hears "to give a voice," "to add a rung," and "to make real," the changes that Senator Kennedy championed stand out as his legacy.

"It is a string of events that would have broken a lesser man. And it would have been easy for Teddy to let himself become bitter and hardened; to surrender to self-pity and regret; to retreat from public life and live out his years in peaceful quiet. This gives an inspirational impact to his audience that Kennedy is like a warrior, and to see him as a figure of empowerment to encourage those around him to keep on going despite of life's obstacles.

In this part of the speech, President Obama names some of Senator Kennedy's accomplishments. In a eulogy you obviously commemorate the loss of the person in a good way, but in a way that isn't divisive. Being involved in politics calls for disagreement between parties, but this section focus more on basic rights, which is often times bipartisan. He appeals to our sense of pride in support of his actions.

I found it interesting and one usually why Obama mentioned that Kennedy was the "youngest" or the "baby". In my eyes maybe it was for the audience to give sympathy for being a younger one in the family and accomplishing so much. It could also be to show that as the youngest he suffered the most loss as he would later transition into the many deaths and tragic experiences Mr. Kennedy would face. However, I am not too sure about what these quotes exactly add to the eulogy it was just something I noticed and stuck out to me.

Through his own suffering, Ted Kennedy became more alive to the plight and suffering of others— the sick child who could not see a doctor; the young soldier sent to battle without armor; the citizen denied her rights because of what she looks like or who she loves or where she comes from. The landmark laws that he championed—the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, immigration reform, children’s health care, the Family and Medical Leave Act—all have a running thread.

This quote, although long, is a really nice example of mirroring done by President Obama. Obama, in this quote, not only used repetition, but also mirrored sentence structure. The repetition throughout this quote helps really equalize the struggles that Kennedy saw, but also show how many different kinds of suffering he was exposed to. In the second repetition, he actually just lists out the different acts and legislation passed, showcasing the full impact Kennedy had on American people. Finally, the mirrored sentences structure makes it so that it almost seems like for every struggle that Kennedy saw, he created a solution. These kinds of rhetorical choices and structural choices really help portray Kennedy as a person worth commemorating.
