The genre of hatchet is described as young adult fiction. well its not based off a true story so it cant be non fiction. based on the childish wording in the story it is clear that it is for younger people. there isn't really a specific quote to show that the story is fiction

possibly the most important tool to Brian's survival is the hatchet his mother gave him. Brian even realizes the tools importance after a tornado destroys everything he had so far. he realized he still had the hatchet, and he could build up again with it. it provided him with fire and the ability to create other tools, and so much more.
