Using a 12 step model for treatment, many believe that addiction is brought on by genetic, and social influences. In addition, it's believed that the use of drugs like cocaine make small scale chemical changes to the brain at first, while extended use causes wide spread chemical alterations.

Some drugs, like Marijuana and Methamphetamine currently have no clinical medication to assist in their addictions. However, opiates and cocaine addicts can be prescribed Methadone/Naltrexone and Amantadine respectively. The meds for both work to prevent the "high" of each drug, while helping recovering addicts through withdrawals.

For almost every addiction, there is an "anonymous" support group. Alcoholics anonymous, Narcotics anonymous, etc... Other methods include inpatient stays, halfway houses, or the Oxford House system. All 3 work with patients in support groups, providing scheduled interventions to detoxify members away from drug-using environments, with differing intensities for each program.

Addiction as a Personal choice

Many Doctors believe that aside from biological reasons, addiction is also a personal choice. Often, smokers are cited, claiming that they can quit if their desire is strong enough. Programs like Rational Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Self Management and Recovery Training, place sobriety in the hands of the addicts, and avoid the religious aspects of a 12 step program.

Many believe that addiction is rooted in the environment around an addict. Hard-core addicts can be traced back to low-income, low-opportunity environments, and call for a portion of their spending to be allocated into improving those areas. Some call for broader changes however, to entire lifestyles. Selective decriminalization, adolescent use prevention, and harm reductions are all taken into consideration.
