Working with the vine charcoal was definitely challenging since it smudges so easily. While I think it was ultimately a success since the charcoal’s mobility really helped to make realistic shading, it also made it hard to get crisp edges and fine details to look right. Linocut printing was difficult at first, especially trying to fine-tune the amount and consistency of ink to use to get opaque and non-patchy prints without bleeding, but I think after practice it turned out well. I think another successful thing was using the grid method because it made the proportions so exact.

In the charcoal selfie, it was challenging to figure out how to use vine charcoals effectively. It was also difficult to carve my word, "kind," into the linoleum plate and ensure that the letters shared similar thicknesses and heights. In my project, I think that I was successful in conveying a pensive mood through my portrait's expression, black and white shading, and the green/aqua/blue tones. Additionally, the grid helped to make the face proportional, which is extremely important given humanity's uncanny ability to determine if a facial drawing looks "wrong."

A couple of things that were challenging were shading because I kept on rubbing the side of my hand on the paper and that would smug everything so I would have to redo it. Also, it was hard to get the right shades of pink, orange, and yellow using watercolor. What was successful about the project for me was the whole thing. I really liked the shading on the portrait and I also liked how the colors were blended. Also, I think that the word, “ ICON” printed out pretty well.

Some things that were challenging about this were carving into the block (I accidentally did it backwards!) and erasing the lines after I drew them. I thought that the lines would come off easily since I used an 8B, and it tends to smudge a lot, however I was wrong! I really like the shape though! I'm not usually good at drawing proportionate features, so I feel that this was a win! I also like the shading (some came off when I put it in my binder), as I feel like it gives my drawing a lot of depth!!
