The motif of these deaths in ‘Us’ embodies, materialism at is finest. Over and over again deaths throughout the film occurred all in different ways, however all signifying the same idea. Gabe killing Abraham with his boat and Tex with a flare, Zora killing the twins with the golf club and herself with a car, and Jason killing Dalilah with a mantled rock. Most ‘shown’ deaths within the film, were caused not from the scissors the tethered handled, but rather symbols that denoted the American upper middle class. This portraying the idea how their objects are not bettering anyone, rather being used as weapons, to assert dominance over the poorer society or in his case literally killing people, this leading to the death of “US” (United States).

It is used when Pluto is forced to walk backwards in to fire. He is standing in the position Jesus was crucified in. Jesus is God’s son and Pluto is the son of Red. Red is the leader of all the tethered not only literally but spiritually. This could be displaying that Red believes she is God or a messenger of God, doing God’s work. This is reinforced by the bible verse Jeremiah 11:11 which is displayed on the sign the man is holding as Adelaide walks off in the start of the movie. The bible verse reads “Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.” As Adeliade see this just before she is switched to become Red this would be significant in her mind when she “finds god” and she probable tries to fulfil this verse with her army of tethered being the “evil.” While that is one way fire is used to symbolise religion there is another way in the same scene where Pluto gets burnt to death. While Pluto is walking backwards towards fire, Jason is at the same time walking backwards towards the sun. This is a common theme in religion as God is represented by light and hell is represented by fire. This demonstrates that Jason is good and walking the path towards God whereas Pluto is walking towards hell.

The numbers is a self-mirrored image of each other, the major representation of the relationship between the doppelganger of the Tethers and Wilson’s. Number 11 is believed to behold as a doorway, and therefore a time, because it consists of two 1s and one signifies a beginning. At 30:21 – 30:23 the clock strikes 11:11 the signification of a new beginning, shortly after the Tether arrived in order to reclaim their importance, which was once overthrown by the people who had oppressed them.
