Negative reinforcement was definitely effective for me, but it&#39;s also a reality of many iconic classical musicians&#39; past. It almost acts historical proof of efficacy !! Help 🥺</title>

<title>All we do needs to be tailored to each child. It can be so easy to think this area of technique needs to improve so let me focus on this endlessly until they get it. Perhaps all the child needs is something easy to perform to help them grow in confidence before they tackle something more challenging</title>

<title>This really resonates with me, but also makes me conflicted! I have always deeply believed that I didn&#39;t practise enough as a child and that I was taught in a way that held me back from the things that I now want to achieve as a professional musician. I want to make sure that nothing I does holds a child back, either by leaving a child with technical problems that will cause trouble later or by making the experience unpleasant for them. But how can I know what a young child will want in the future and how to make sure they can get there?</title>

<title>As you mentioned, often pieces that were diverse repertoire were just used to serve a classical goal (e.g. a fiddle piece for double stops / string crossing that might help a concerto later).
