Freedmen’s Bureau- started by Abraham Lincoln to help African-Americans get into schools, get food, medicine and clothes.

Black Codes- laws to keep African Americans from voting, getting jobs, traveling, and many other things they didn’t want African Americans being a part of or succeeding in.

Therefore, African Americans weren’t really free because there were in fear of their lives because of the past years of slavery. They didn’t know any other life than being a slave. Many of them were scared to find out what would happen if they tried fighting for the right, because they have seen others do the same and gain no progress.

Therefore, African Americans weren’t really free because although the 13 amendment was put in place to free African-Americans they were not truly free from brutalization of white people. And the government didn’t seem to care if this brutalization went on.

In the picture I see four different people. Two of them are caucasian and equal to eachother and the other two people are african americans on the floor below them who are all shown to be unequal to them. The power that the kkk and slave owner holds in that photo is disturbing.

The picture shows that slavery was not abolished and slaves were not free.

Personally I think African Americans were not free because they were still forced to work in plantations. They continued to live in fear because the KKK and other groups still had control over them shown in the top left picture.
