Therefore, African Americans weren’t really free because there were in fear of their lives because of the past years of slavery. They didn’t know any other life than being a slave. Many of them were scared to find out what would happen if they tried fighting for the right, because they have seen others do the same and gain no progress. 

Therefore, African Americans weren’t really free because although the 13 amendment was put in place to free African-Americans they were not truly free from brutalization of white people.
