Wavy hair was brushed to the back with side part. The sides were tapered but not shaved. It can be straightened with lots of heavy oil or by wearing a hat to lay it flat.

Lack of hair was a sign of age, wisdom and respect.

1 wet hair in a swiping motion from forehead to back.

2 apply brilliantine (a popular hair paste used in barbers/by individuals).

3 add coconut/jojoba oil for moisture.

4 add petroleum jelly for extra hold.

5 comb in place but don’t have any visible comb lines.

Facial hair:

Used moustaches to counterbalance lack of hair. No one had fully facial hair covering their face. A beard was a sign of hiding something and is unsanitary. Moustaches were very popular.

1 loose powder for a light look. Send to fill in and even out colour, texture and spots.

2 blush (rosy red for light, raspberry red for dark tones). Centre of cheeks no further down than tip of nose. Look youthful. Blush ears and knees too.

3 lipstick should be red, Matt and have a hint of orange/yellow. Want to make a Cupid bow effect to seem as childlike and young as possible.

4 eyebrows are to be kept a natural colour and thin. Petroleum jelly gives shine and hold.

5 eye pencil in the shade of natural hair colour. Place on top eyelid and smudge to make lashes look fuller. Brown for day/black for evening.

6 eyeshadow is applied even over upper lid. None at all on lower lashes. Black/brown/dark colours bring out eye colour.

Clues would be in the drawers and around the mirror, mirrors would be two-way maybe?

-The audience is immersed in the barbershop where they need to solve the puzzles in the present. The choices they make to find the clues will determine whether or not they end up in a secret society.

Simply put, what matters is that you live in the moment and enjoy it to the fullest, not looking back. With the wacky barbershop, we want to show that people can enjoy even something as usual as a barbershop appointment, even though it is not as simple as it seems.

Roles include:

• Researcher. Throughout the project I have looked into the themes and initial inspiration for the room as well as some of the background to Boomtown.

• 3D digital Designer. I have been working on multiple concept and final visuals for the room to imagine how we can bring it together as a space for the audience.

• Graphic Designer. I worked on bringing a variety of the props' graphics together after researching the media surrounding the 1920s. Also worked on bringing an accurate magazine to life through InDesign, etc...

• The secret society is secret for a reason, it is not open to the public so people can be interested in what it is about and engage with the narrative coming to the escape room (they could know about the society from the rumors or hidden posters)

• In future realisation the tokens can be used as a ticket into another secret location - connecting the copper wood hidden stories together

• If the audience is not interested in society, they might just come to solve the puzzles and get some fancy stamps, glitter on their hair, temporary tattoos or condoms as something to take away or collect from the stories and take as a memory

We used the barber shop logo to cover the chairs as they already had an old embroidered name on the back. It is printed and cut around a piece of cardboard for stability. For boomtown we could try and re-embroider it to make it look more professional.

I am a performer for Megan's final performance. Each of us has thought about our costumes and managed to source them ourselves without using any of our budget. For Boomtown, I will continue to be a performer and can bring my costume with me.

I am one of the narrative designers working on the storyline, background and flow of clues. Our barbershop narrative and clues have been developed from week 1 to fit Boomtown's brief and the audience that will be attending the escape room.

• Concept artist, needing to have a base visual for our room which we since adapted and updated in the realised vision but are necessary for early stages of production.

• Graphic design, creating the logo for our barber shop ‘Cyrptic Comb’ was vital keeping in the 1920s theme and still allowing for the escape room to have a name that is accurate to the space along with the designing of smaller props for products our performers would potentially use.

• Set Design, building and painting the set and props to create the art deco aesthetic necessary to feel in the right era for our potential location keeping to a simple palette of green, black and gold.

• Narrative writer, initial concepts created at the start for us to talk through and change where necessary for a fun but not overly complicated storyline.

This helps to build our narrative of the "Secret Hair Society". In a way which simulates the player's vivid imaginations from the very start, without having to create nearly impossible hairstyles ourselves.

Designing this from scratch was harder than it seems.

-Research. I did some research on barbershops in the 1920s and looked into the audience of Boomtown to give us a better understanding of who they are.

- Performer. I got to play the role of a hairsweep outside of the barbershop letting the audience in. As Izi mentioned, we came up with own costumes from the clothes we had.

-Props/graphics. Mainly worked on our framed photographs of celebrities to put them around the room and make it look more realistic. As the initial narrative was changed, went into Photoshop to change the hairstyles to crazier ones. In general, helped the group with whatever needed to be painted or styled. Managed to get some materials that I already had and brought them in the studio.

As a budget holder, I had the responsibility of ensuring that as group we stayed inside of the £100 ‘hard’ cash and £50 ‘petty’ cash budgets. To ensure that we managed our budgets correctly, I created, and actively updated budget documents created on excel. This allowed us to monitor the money and show us where we needed to ‘pull back’ from spending.

As a production manager, I ensured that props, costume and set order deadlines were met. I also had the duty of submitting the order lists in with prices and links to websites before the deadline. Additionally, I have ensured that expense forms have been completed correctly and receipts have been submitted.

• In this role I made list of what props that we will need and organized them into things that we had to make and things that would need to purchase. After we had used our budget o the order list on the bigger items for the scenic design, I found props that we could use online of a cheep price and added them to the order list.

• There was also a Large item that was necessary to the the escape room the, barber chair, witch after researching we found would be very expensive new, however I found two chairs for free on Facebook market place and organized picking them up and delivering them to the studio.

Rigging:

• I have also taken up the role of rigging, and have found and rigged the lights I the space, considering what would also be realistic for us to take to boom town.

• Concept Artist/ Character Illustrator - I independently illustrated the catalogue of hairstyles as a form of world buildingIt adds to our narrative of the "Secret Hair Society" in a way which simulates the player's vivid imaginations from the very start.

• Props : I made, designed and sourced materials for our room. I tried searching for a real barber pole, asking some barbers across town where they source theirs from or if they're giving away stuff. Buying a pole is far too expensive so I decided to make them from scratch, hand painting them with some help from Catherine. Took initiative to source materials from my own pocket like hair, many wigs, mannequin heads, clothes, products, craft materials and other random bits and bobs. At various stages I've helped my group mates with the decor - painting, drilling, lifting and interior design choices.

• Performer - The Lady In The Chair.

  
  

  This role is bigger and more enjoyable than I originally thought. The functional purpose of the Lady is to explain the game to players at the start and guide them throughout with riddles and improvisation. The experiential/emotional purpose of the Lady (together with the Barber) is to add comedy, make people laugh and uplift their spirits. Especially when talking back and forth with the barber, so that it's as engaging and fun for the players as we can make it. It's basically us being silly like lunatics, and from each run-through people seem to really love it!

  I think these positive responses have encouraged us to be more confident in our roles, and in practicing them for August. It took a while to build up this character since my acting skills were a bit rusty, but I started to really get into it; taking inspiration form roleplaying with my sister as a kid and other media influences such as Spink and Forcible from Coraline my favorite childhood movie, Brigerton's Golda Rosheuvel (Charlotte), Georgina Leahy (Stella) in Helluva Boss, and even mimicking some of my posh classmates.

• Teamwork: Overall assisting my team members here and there with what they're doing, and staying back often till late or closing time to complete extra work.

• Co -Writer: With Izi I helped to write element of the script, mostly to do with my characters lines. We (mainly her) adjusted it to make the dialogue flow with the game.

• Narrative writing: I wrote up several initial concepts going in different directions that we could use to base our final narrative on. Some where more fun and quirky and others more sinister.

• Graphic Design: I made 9 different illustrations of different 1920s hairstyles, male and female. I wanted the to be more simple and also more quirky styles that people could try at home. I then made them into print out pamphlets that could be scattered around the set and also taken away.

• Props: I worked on building and painting several props to fit in with our theme of our escape room. I worked on the clock to time the escape room, the barber shop poles and also painting some of the furniture so that it would all match in the room.

We know that in the realisation we will not be able to fully stick to the script as the audience will interact with the actors in unpredictable ways. The script is there as a guidance tool for how to help them towards the clues, through the narrative and to the final aim.
