These marches were marches to escape the Red Army as they advanced to the German border camps. They were called Death Marches because of the cold weather, freezing snow, the prisoners not being taken care of; so many things that could end in your death! Irene was not fed or taken care of, and anyone who fell or slowed down would be shot, and there was no way out of it as these marches were forced. The roads would be filled with prisoners, and Irene marched from Auschwitz to Neustadt - Giewe, 450 miles away. Irene would starve for 5 months, and this is a reason why the marches were inhumane. If someone could not handle the march or weather, there were shot. If you were hungry, you are not getting food for a LONG time. If you were to survive the March most of the people would be transferred to a camp that has gas chambers to kill the Jews. Irean had to walk 450 miles.
