Push him in quickly!
One morning, Mary came into Colin's room and said Dickon will come soon with his animals. While they were having breakfast, Dickon arrived with a lamb too. The children decided to visit the secret garden together, the next day, but they had to wait a week because Colin had a cold.
One week later, they brought Colin to the garden and they showed him the secret door. They pushed him into the garden and when Colin opened his eyes, he looked around without speaking because he saw beautiful walls covered with plants. He felt immediately well and hopefullness came to him. They sat on the grass and they saw the robin with something in his beak. Colin wanted to have some tea and Mary and Dickon went to the house and then came back with some tea. They drank and ate and Colin decided to came back in the garden everyday. Colin suddenly saw a man who was Ben Weatherstaff. He was looking into the garden on the top of a ladder and he shouted at Mary. Colin stood up, holding Dickon's arm and he said to Ben that, that was his garden and he wanted to talk with him.
Magic is in me

Ben came into the garden and Colin said him he wasn't a hunchback and that, that was his mother's garden and now it's his. Ben must help the children. When Colin came back to the house there was Mr. Craven who was surprised because Colin stayed out too long.

When Mr. Craven left, Mary said Colin that it must be difficult for Dr. Craven to understand this change.
Colin decided to stop being horrible,because he said that in the garden,there was magic. So he spent everyday there,when it didn't rain.
Colin decided to say everyday "Magic is in me!" to feel better and he started to walk holding Dickon's arm but a few steps alone. He said that it must be a secret until he can run like all the boys. When Dickon came back home,while he was working in the vegetable garden,he told his stories to his mother, Mrs. Sowerby, who asked him,what the people said in the house about Colin's improvement. Dickon answered that they didn't know anything because it's a secret,but there was a problem: Colin couldn't eat more food because the other people could think that he was getting better. Mrs. Sowerby said that she couldn't make some bread and some fresh milk for Colin everyday.
The next morning, Dickon brought bread and milk and Colin said it was all good and that, Dickon's mother was special and magic.
One day, a man who was a champion wrestler, taught Dickon some exercises for making muscles stronger. So Colin practised them everyday and everyday he grew stronger. Dr Craven came to the house, and talked to the nurse. The nurse said that Mary and Colin looked very well, and that they laughed together all the time, but perhaps they were growing fat on that. Dr Craven answered that it was better let them laugh.

One day Mary went outside to the garden where she met Ben who told her that the robin's garden has locked for ten years. She decided to walk along the path near the garden's wall with the robin, suddnely the robin started making a hole near some plants. She watched him working and then she found an old key: the garden's key! She decided to carry it in her pocket. The next day Martha gave a present to Mary, it was a rope. Mary was happy and she went into the garden to skip the rope along her special path by the wall. The robin followed her and he flew to the top of the wall where suddenly the wind moved some ivy. Under the ivy she found out a door so she decided to put the key in the door , it opened. It was a wonderful place full of roses and trees but Mary didn't know if they were alive. She thought to clean all the garden. Mary asked Martha where she could buy a spade, a fork and some seeds. Martha answered that her brother can buy them for her.

EXTRA
Rich Victorian children had a lot of toys made in factories like dolls and some mechanical toys like jack-in-the-box. They kept them in a special room called nursery. Instead poor children had homemade toys like a piece of wood for a soldier and they played in the street.
Indoor games
1- Grey rocking horses were very popular because they were the Queen Victoria's favorite toys.
2-Snakes and Ladders was a board game for rich children. To play this game they needed a dice and colored disc. The first person to arrive at the top square of the board was the winner.
3-Marbles were small,glass balls that were very famous at the time.
4-Scrapbook were made with cards,tickets of animals ,flowers or funny faces.
5-To play Tiddlywinks you need small coloured discs that you make them jump in a cup.
Outdoor games
1-The Victorians liked a lot football, poor children played it with balls made from rags or pig's bladders.
2- Badminton was similar to tennis bu with a shuttlecock.
3- Hood and Stick was a game with a large empty circle made of wood with a stick.
4- Hobby Horses was a cheaper game than rocking horses for poor children. CHAPTER 4
One day Mary was in the secret garden and she was talking with Ben. When she decided to go to the woods to see any rabbits, she saw a boy under a tree, playing on a wooden pipe. A squirrel, a pheasant and two rabbits were listening to him.
Dickon already knew her and he gave to Mary her tools and flower-seeds. Dickon made a robin noise and the robin answered, so Mary found out that Dickon can talk with animals.
Mary decided to tell him where was the garden, so Dickon went to the garden every day. Meantime Mr.Craven came back from his journey, and he told her that she can do what she want, also visit Mrs. Sowerby's house with Martha.
When May ran to the secret garden Dickon wasn't there: he left a message.

CHAPTER 5
Mary heard the crying again and she follow the noise till a room. In the room there was a very thin and white boy. They talked and Mary found out that the boy is Mr. Craven's son, Colin.
Colin thought that his father hates him because his mother died when he was born. Talking to Mary, he found out the existence of the secret garden. Colin showed a picture of his mother, that he hid behind a courtain, to Mary. The next day Mary said to Martha that she found Colin. When Martha went to him, he said that he wanted to see Mary. They talked for a long time and laughed so much that they forgot about the time. One morning Mary woke up and she went to the garden. When she arrived there was Dickon with his animals, a fox and a crow.
She told to him that she met Colin and she wanted to bring him to the secret garden.

EXTRA: The book's author is Frances Hodgson Burnett. She was born in Manchester, England, on 24th November 1849, and she was the third of five children. Her father died in 1854 so she grew up with her grandmother. In 1873, Frances married Swam Burnett. They went to live in Paris and they had two sons (Lionel and Vivian). In 1876 she published her first novel "That lass o' Lowries". it was a awesome success and the family moved to Washington. in 1898 Swan and Frances got divorced . From 1898 to 1907, she wrote "The secret garden", a novel which is now a classic of english children's literature. She wrote this novel because a few years later, she found a dead garden and a robin helped her find the door. So as in the book she brought the garden back to life, by planting a lot of flowers. The last novel that she wrote is "A little princess". She died in New York on 29th October 1929.
THE CHARACTERS: the protagonists are Mary Lennox, Colin Craven and Dickon Sowerby. Mary was born in India and she was ten years old. When Mary cried her nurse gave her everything she wanted so she became a child who was not very healthy and not very nice. One day her parents died and she become a sad child. At first Mary was a lonely and surly child but when she meet Colin and Dickon she become a different girl, always happy, kind and smiling.
Dickon was 12 years old and he was Martha's brother and Susan's son. He loves animals and he has the power to charm both animals and people infact his power to tame creatures works on Colin and Mary and he is one of the central causes of their transformations.
Colin was Mr Craven's son and it is feared that he will crow up to be a hunchback like is father. Colin spent his childhood in bed and for this he is imperious and gloomy. At the end of the novel, Colin became a optimist and confident person.
Another characters in the book are: Martha, Archibald and Ben.
Ben was house's gardener. He was a old man with a white beard and he helps the children keep the secret of the garden.
Martha was a young woman, she was Colin's sister and she was housemaid. During the story she became Mary's friend.
Archibald Craven was Colin's father and Mary's uncle.
He spent his time traveling. At the end of story Mr. Craven change, after his wife comes to him in a dream and he went to secret garden and hugs his son because he realizes that Colin is in perfect health.

CHAPTER 1: Mary Lennox is an indian child. When she was nine years old, she saw her mother speaking to a man, while Mary was playing into the garden. Her mother was crying.
At night Mary's nurse and other staff in the house died. This was how Mary found out her mother and father were dead.
Mary arrived in London in her uncle's empty house. She went to London by train and then by carriage. Mrs Medlock took Mary to her room.

CHAPTER 2:In the morning a young housemaid, Martha chatted with Mary about her family; her brother Dickon has twelve years old and Mary thought him sounded interesting. After breakfast Mary, went outside to a gardener . A bird sang and Mary stopped to listen its. It is the robin and it is very friendly. The old man made a noise and the bird flew to him. The man said his name, Ben Weatherstaff. Then the robin flew into the garden with no door .The garden is closed since ten years when Mr Craven's wife died.
Mary walked along the path near the wall of this garden and she saw the robin sitting on the wall. Mary thought about the door.
In the evening Martha said to Mary why Mr Craven closed the garden: one day while Mrs. Craven was on a swing, a branch of a tree broke and Mrs Craven fell. She died the next day, so the man hates the garden.
While Mary was finding the library, she heard a cry of a child. Then she saw Mrs. Medlock coming with an angry look on her face. The woman took Mary by the arm and then she pushed the child into her room:

CHAPTER: Colin was angry with Mary because she didn't come to talk to him all day: she was out in the garden with Dickon. When she came back home and went to Colin's bedroom they argued: he shouted to her that she was selfish because she didn't think about him and his illness. Then Mary came back to her room and she met Martha: she was waiting for her with a box from Mr. Craven. When she opened the box she found a lot of things: some books about gardens a gold pen, a writing paper and some games. Thanks for that she forgot that she was angry. She wanted to show her presents to Colin, but he was angry with her.
While she was sleeping, in the middle of the night she heard colin shouting: Mary went into his bedroom to calm him down. Colin was crying and told Mary that he was going to be a hunchback. She saw his back and she didn't found anything. She said to him that if he would talk about that again, she would laugh. Then he understood that he wasn't going to be a hunchback and stopped crying.
The next morning, Mary met Dickon: they spoke about Dickon and decided to take him to the garden.
The next day, Mary reveled to Colin that she found the key and the door to their secret place weeks before.

EXTRA: Thanks to the Secret Garden, a very special place, Mary and Colin became very happy children and met a new friend: Dickon. He's a boy who can speak with animals and knows how take care of plants.
ROBINS: In the story, it helps Mary by finding the door and the key to the Secret Garden. This bird has red breasts. In winter, he often stays in British Gardens: that's why they're usually on Christmas post-cards! They sing very often. When the female is pregnant, she makes a nest and there she lays four os six eggs. After the eggs hatch, the chicks have feathers only after ten days and they can see well after eight days. After fourteen days, they can fly. While the female looks after the chicks, the male looks for food and worms. CROWS: The crow is a Dickon's friend. Soot is black and found in chimneys. There are many different types of crows: medium or large with strong feet. The magpie likes bright objects and collects them. The ones who live in zoos can sometimes repeat what people say. FOXES: Dickon has also a fox, Captain. These animals live in the countryside and towns. They eat anything they find, for example, insects. If they find a lot of food, they put it underground and they eat it later. They live in an earth where in spring they have five or six cubs. While the males find food, the females look after their cubs for two weeks. The cubs stay with their mothers until autumn, then they make their own families. They live for eighteen months in town. For the 50% they die in car accidents. In countries they live for three years. WILD HORSES: Dickon has also a horse. In Britain there are only two areas where horses live freely in the moors. In Exmoor and Dartmoor horses lived for 3.500 years. Those horses have short legs, they're very strong and they live in the moor. Today on Dartmoor there are 1.500 horses and on Exmoor about 800. SQUIRRELS: Dickon has two squirrels: Nut and Shell. Britain has been red squirrels' home, and in the 19th century it has been grey squirrels' home. Now you can find red squirrels only in some island of the south cost of England. Squirrels have two groups of litters: one in February-March and one in June-July. In every group there are two or six squirrels. The litters cannot see and they have no fur when they are born. They all live in the top of the trees. They leave their nest after ten weeks. RABBITS AND HARES: Rabbits arrived in Britain 900 years ago. They became important for their meat and their fur, which is used to make worm clothes. They have 7 litters each with 3-7 babies. They all live in burrows. They leave their nest after 4 weeks. Then, the female prepares a new burrow to have more babies. They eat all kinds of plants. Rabbits are quite like squirrels but they have longer legs and fewer babies: 12 a year. They eat just a little of wild food. WILDLIFE CENTRES: There are many wildlife centres in Britain where people help animal: they help with the conservation and the scientific study of wildlife. There are also some hospitals for injured animals. Visitors can come and see the animals. INJURED WILDLIFE: Things you have to do if you find an injured animal:
-Put on you gloves
-It must be away from your face.
-Put it in a box with holes for air
-Put in newspaper
