Biodiversity Loss at Fraser's Hill

Fraser's Hill, a highland ecosystem in Peninsular Malaysia, is renowned for its rich wildlife diversity, including the Malayan tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, dhole, and Malayan tapir. It boasts the highest diversity of seed plants among the highlands, with at least 30 endemic species, and is part of the Central Titiwangsa Range, an Identified Bird Area with over 250 bird species. Despite its environmental significance, Fraser's Hill faces multiple threats. The Draft Local District Plan (RTD) for Raub District 2035 proposes an access road bisecting the forest to enhance connectivity and ecotourism, posing a threat to the ecosystem which is unsustainable linear infrastructure. Additionally, the push to develop Raub as an agropolitan center pressures the conversion of forest reserves to agricultural land, despite legal protections. Illegal recreational sites, such as Kem Sangka, further disrupt the area. The surge in domestic tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite its economic benefits, has led to unsustainable tourism practices, threatening the delicate balance of this biodiverse haven.

The Struggle for Survival of Marine Turtles

In Semporna, Sabah, the survival of marine turtles like the Green Turtle and Hawksbill Turtle is increasingly at risk due to a combination of various situation . Direct threats include poaching, where eggs are illegally harvested from nesting beaches, and bycatch, where turtles become ensnared in fishing nets. Additionally, boat strikes from increased marine traffic cause injuries to these vulnerable creatures. This is driven by factors such as rising tourism, expanding global trade, increased fishing activities, and increase in population growth in coastal areas. The coastal development destroys crucial nesting sites, while pollution from marine debris, especially plastics, contaminates their habitat, leading to fatal ingestion of harmful materials.

Conservation Challenges of the Malayan Tiger

The survival of the Malayan Tiger, found only in the Malay Peninsula, is crucial and hinges on the conservation efforts within the Belum-Temenggor Forest Complex. This tiger subspecies, differentiated from the Indochinese Tiger in 2004, faces severe threats from poaching and habitat loss. Poaching of both tigers and their prey is intensified by ineffective management of forest reserves and the accessibility provided by the Gerik-Jeli highway. Additionally, the conversion of natural forests into plantations and agricultural land further fragments their habitat. Unsustainable logging practices degrade forests and create logging roads that facilitate illegal activities, threatening crucial areas such as salt licks vital for tiger prey. Effective conservation must focus on strengthening forest management, preserving natural habitats, and implementing sustainable logging to ensure the survival of the Malayan Tiger
