For me, as a teacher, incorporating AI into assessment proves to be a great time saver. For instance, in our previous task where we devised rubrics for assessment, doing so manually would have consumed significantly more time. However, with the assistance of AI, the process was completed in a matter of minutes. This stands as a testament to the potency of AI as a powerful and supportive tool in the realm of education.

I agree with a fellow teacher from a podcast we've listened to, emphasizing the critical role of feedback in the teaching process and how AI can significantly contribute to this aspect.

A particularly creative idea I came across involves leveraging AI to write a text emulating the style of notable figures such as JohnTolkien, Stephen King, or even Barack Obama. This task allows for the analysis of style and language, presenting an intriguing exercise made possible through the capabilities of AI. It underscores the integration of AI into our lives as a tool that can be harnessed for our benefit.

However, we can certainly find more authentic and original ways to evaluate our students by going beyond the ordinary. It is good to ask ourselves if this serves the needs of teaching and learning, the age of the students, what we want to assess... That is, what we always do as teachers.. .Just now we can have a valuable ally!

This is a revolution in itself from our comfort zone of the traditional assessment methods. This revolution is a worthy process since it reduces administrative and routine paper work. It is less time consuming. In fact, the educator as the expert in the field, has to review and fine tune the given task and rubric. It also leads to a shift from traditional content knowledge based assessment to higher order reasoning skills, which are highlighted in the 21st Century skills and the needs of continuously changing society.

In my opinion, it is absolutely certain that the incorporation of AI in the assessment of our students will mean an important advance and a considerable saving of time to be able to dedicate to other more important things. But I have mixed feelings. In my case, creating a personal rubric is an important cognitive effort because you really focus your marks on what you want the student to learn. In this sense, I have doubts about whether AI is capable of that. What is true is that it gives you a good basis to start working from, but I really think we need to take that basis and adapt it, not just use to what the AI gives us. I say this because I have already seen teachers who take the result and apply it directly to the classroom, and I think that you need a deep analysis of the result offered by the AI and then an adaptation to the content of your class.

Naturally, alongside the disadvantages, artificial intelligence also brings numerous advantages to the student assessment process. The benefits of ai tools in this context serve to help and support teachers and students. Considering the podcast and the tips in the Unesco guide, it is extremely important to carry out research with Ai very carefully to obtain the expected results. Thus, prompt engineering arises, which consists of: giving simple and clear instructions, giving examples, framing the study, experimenting with different research variations, trying not to be discriminatory and, in the end, critically evaluating. Only with these research techniques can a study/essay/work be achieved, as faithfully as possible.

What I really find difficult is to write the correct prompt. I suppose that at the moment it's not perfect, so before using the results of ChatGPT, we always have to check that everything is correct and secondly adapt the results to your class.

As I teach English language and literature I could use AI to help students reflect on some issues posed by the musical Chicago. Watching a film lasting about two hours in class is quite time consuming, so instead of asking them to watch it at home, which might end up in just finding a summary on the Net for some of them, I could ask students, working in pair, to ask ChatGPT for example, to write a summary for them. Next, they could ask AI to shorten it to 50 words. They should compare the two versions and say which the good and bad points of each are, in their opinion.

After that, I would tell students to ask AI what literary works the musical could be compared to. As the task is very general, the ‘machine’ might ask the students to be more precise, they may not know the work suggested, so this should lead to discussion and encourage them to use their critical thinking abilities and question the abilities of AI to act in their place. Moreover, as the movie deals with crime which becomes just entertainment, students should be encouraged to discuss ethical behaviour in society and this could be a starting point to discuss ethical implications concerning the use of AI. Assessment should take into consideration the students’ speaking abilities, collaboration, their ability to pick up similarities and differences and their ability to ask AI questions relevant to the task.

1. Clarity of Expectations:

 - The rubric clearly outlines the expectations for different levels of performance. This clarity helps both students and teachers understand what is required for each level of proficiency.

2. Objective Evaluation:

 - The rubric provides specific criteria for assessment, making the evaluation process more objective. This reduces the potential for subjective judgments and allows for a more consistent and fair assessment across different students and assignments.

3. Feedback Mechanism:

 - A well-designed rubric serves as a feedback mechanism. By breaking down the assessment into specific criteria, teachers can provide targeted feedback to students on their strengths and areas for improvement. This helps students understand how to enhance their performance.

4. Alignment with Learning Objectives:

 - The rubric is aligned with the learning objectives of the physics curriculum. This ensures that the assessment is directly tied to what students are expected to learn, promoting a more meaningful and purposeful educational experience.

5. Promotion of Higher-Order Thinking:

 - The rubric includes criteria that assess not only basic knowledge but also higher-order thinking skills such as analysis, application, and creativity. This encourages students to engage with the material at a deeper level.

6. Transparency in Grading:

 - The rubric makes the grading process transparent. Students can see exactly how their work will be evaluated, which demystifies the grading process and promotes a sense of fairness.

7. Continuous Improvement:

 - Teachers can use the rubric as a tool for their own professional development. By reflecting on the effectiveness of the rubric and the assessment process, educators can make continuous improvements to enhance the learning experience for students.

8. Efficiency in Assessment:

 - The rubric streamlines the assessment process. Teachers can quickly and efficiently evaluate student work by referencing the predefined criteria, which is especially valuable in classrooms with large numbers of students.

9. Holistic Assessment:

 - The rubric allows for a holistic assessment of student performance.

Ai can really improve improve teachers´ work and students´ learning. On the one hand, it can save teachers work and time, allowing them to dedicate themselves more to the human side of education. On the other hand, with teachers´guidance, it can become a very effective tool for student development, allowing them deeper and more extensive learnings and a greater development of creativity and critical thinking. In order to write the appropriate request, which returns the desired result from AI, a student must reflect on the objective and content, be creative in the request and know exactly what they really want, than, critically analyze the output. In which “traditional” school task would we achieve all this at once and in a short time?

There are risks, many. But the role of a teacher is to teach students about those risks: how to identify them and how to avoid them.

We are, therefore, in a time of change in the educational system, where a grade is no longer achieved through an answer given to a question, however, we are still looking for the correct, fair and appropriate way to assess the learning and the skills that students, also, develop with AI.

Implementing AI tools in assessment can provide quick feedback for students and teachers, can be interesting new tool with lots of benefits. But in the end teacher makes assessments human.

Looking at the structured responses of artificial intelligence, I wonder if the already generated intelligence won the battle by changing people's inherent creativity with strictly parametrically defined universal responses that we accept without questioning them because of the lack of time and because of the rapid pace of life that technology (AI) imposes on us.

I tested Bing with my response and here is AI response:

"Thank you for sharing your thoughts on AI tools in assessment. I agree that AI tools can provide quick feedback for students and teachers, and can be interesting new tools with lots of benefits. However, I also agree that the teacher makes assessments human, and that AI tools cannot replace the human touch and judgment.

You raise an interesting question about the impact of AI on people’s creativity. I think that AI can be a source of inspiration and challenge for people, rather than a threat or a limitation. AI can generate new ideas, patterns, and possibilities that people can explore, modify, and improve. AI can also challenge people to think critically, creatively, and ethically about the problems and solutions that AI presents.

However, I also think that people have the responsibility and the power to shape AI according to their values, needs, and goals. People can question, critique, and reject AI-generated responses that are not aligned with their standards, preferences, and expectations. People can also use their own creativity to generate responses that are not strictly parametrically defined by AI, but rather reflect their own unique perspectives, experiences, and emotions.

Therefore, I do not think that AI has won the battle by changing people’s inherent creativity. I think that AI is a tool that can enhance, challenge, and complement people’s creativity, but not replace or diminish it. I think that people and AI can coexist and collaborate in a mutually beneficial way, as long as people are aware of the strengths and limitations of AI, and use it wisely and ethically."

A way to teach how to design good prompts is to ask students (Media Literacy, High School) to interview someone from the past by asking the AI chatbot to pretend that it is that person (or a ghost). To get good answers, they must be good to create good questions. They can get immediate feedback by providing the chatbot with the rubric! Students also learn 21CS like critical thinking and creativity. Good use of AI chatbots is closely linked to good command of 21CS.

The assessment approach should be multifaceted, encompassing technical competence, ethical awareness, and the practical implications of AI prompt creation. Here's a framework for such an assessment:

Critical Thinking and Ethical Awareness:

Ethical Decision-Making: By analyzing and critiquing AI prompts for potential biases and ethical concerns, students develop the ability to make informed ethical decisions in their work. This process instills a sense of responsibility in students, encouraging them to consider the broader societal implications of their actions.

Ethical Reflection: The ethical module and prompt analysis foster a habit of ethical reflection. Students learn not only to identify issues but also to reflect on the ethical principles underlying their choices, leading to a more nuanced and considered approach in AI development.

Adaptability and Real-world Relevance:

Contextual Application: Crafting prompts for various domains and real-world scenarios requires students to understand the contextual nuances of AI deployment. This enhances their adaptability, preparing them for the diverse challenges they may encounter in their careers.

Societal Impact Awareness: Through the analysis of real-world applications, students gain an understanding of how AI technologies can impact society. This awareness goes beyond technical competence, emphasizing the need for responsible and context-aware AI development.

Collaboration and Communication Skills:

Team Collaboration: Group projects encourage collaboration and teamwork, mirroring the interdisciplinary nature of AI development. Students learn to navigate diverse perspectives, improving their ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Effective Communication: The presentation component hones students' communication skills. Articulating the rationale behind prompt selection and discussing ethical considerations requires the ability to convey complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner. This skill is crucial in a field where collaboration and effective communication are paramount.

Iterative Learning and Continuous Improvement:

Iterative Feedback Loop: The iterative feedback process fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Students learn to embrace feedback as a tool for refinement, mirroring the iterative nature of AI model development. This mindset prepares them for the evolving landscape of AI technologies, where adaptability and continuous learning are essential.

Agile Development Approach: The emphasis on iteration and feedback aligns with agile development principles. Students not only refine their prompts but also internalize the importance of agility and responsiveness in the face of evolving project requirements and ethical considerations.

User-Centric Design and Inclusive Practices:

User Experience (UX) Focus: Emphasizing user-centric design introduces students to the importance of creating AI systems that prioritize user experience. This awareness extends beyond technical proficiency, promoting a mindset that values usability, accessibility, and inclusivity in AI development.

Inclusive AI Practices: Through consideration of user perspectives, students develop an understanding of inclusive AI practices. They learn to avoid biases that could adversely impact different user groups, contributing to the creation of AI technologies that are fair and equitable.

I believe the whole assessment process will greatly improve, consequently enhancing the feedback loop, which is pivotal in the learning process. Ultimately, this great improvement in the learning process is something I am truly excited

about.

Implementing AI tools in assessment can revolutionize the educational landscape by offering a range of benefits, from enhancing the efficiency of the grading process to providing real-time insights into student learning. Here are some of the key advantages of integrating AI into assessment practices:

1. Efficiency and Time-Saving

One of the primary benefits of AI in assessment is the automation of routine grading tasks. Tools like Gradescope and Google Forms with Flubaroo can quickly grade multiple-choice, short-answer, and even long-form responses, freeing up time for educators to focus on higher-order instructional activities. AI can process large amounts of student data in a fraction of the time, making it easier to manage grading for large classes or institutions(

TechNotes Blog

).

2. Enhanced Feedback and Personalization

AI tools like Turnitin’s Feedback Studio or EdPuzzle provide detailed, individualized feedback on student work, identifying patterns and suggesting areas for improvement. This personalized feedback can be more specific than traditional methods, guiding students through the learning process and offering targeted resources based on their performance. By providing instant feedback, AI helps support formative assessment, allowing students to reflect and adjust their learning strategies in real-time(

CIRCLS

).

3. Data-Driven Insights and Predictive Analysis

AI-powered learning analytics tools, such as Moodle Analytics or Blackboard Predict, can track student progress and engagement, generating data-driven insights that help educators identify at-risk students early on. By analyzing trends in student performance, AI can suggest interventions to improve learning outcomes, making assessments not just evaluative, but also proactive(

European School Education Platform

).

4. Reducing Human Bias in Grading

AI can help minimize the subjectivity and biases that sometimes influence human grading. Algorithms can standardize the evaluation process by applying consistent criteria across all student submissions, thus enhancing fairness and objectivity. However, it’s important to monitor these algorithms to ensure that AI does not inadvertently introduce new biases based on its training data.

5. Supporting Diverse Learning Styles

AI tools like Quizlet and Khan Academy offer various modes of assessment (e.g., quizzes, flashcards, interactive videos) that accommodate different learning styles and needs. By allowing students to demonstrate their understanding through different formats, AI supports a more inclusive and student-centered approach to assessment.

6. Real-Time Adaptation and Differentiation

AI can dynamically adjust the difficulty of questions or tasks based on a student’s performance. This capability, seen in adaptive learning platforms like Smart Sparrow or ALEKS, allows for real-time differentiation and personalization, providing more challenging content for advanced learners while offering additional support for those struggling.

7. Facilitating Remote and Hybrid Learning

In the context of remote or hybrid education, AI tools can streamline the assessment process by providing automated proctoring, tracking student participation, and verifying the integrity of online assessments. Platforms like Proctorio and Honorlock use AI to monitor and authenticate student activity during online tests, ensuring that assessments remain secure and credible.

Potential to Revolutionize Assessment

By integrating AI, educators can shift from traditional summative assessments to more dynamic, ongoing evaluation models that emphasize learning over performance. AI’s ability to analyze complex data, offer actionable feedback, and tailor learning experiences can make assessment a more continuous and supportive process, rather than a one-time measure of knowledge.

Final Considerations

While AI offers transformative benefits, it’s essential to remain mindful of the ethical implications, such as data privacy and algorithmic fairness. Educators and institutions must develop clear guidelines on AI usage, ensuring that these tools enhance learning and maintain equity and transparency in assessment practices.

Overall, the integration of AI in assessment can lead to more efficient, personalized, and equitable learning environments, ultimately enriching the educational experience for both students and teachers.
