His dream was to become a poet as famous as Lord Byron, an English poet.

Poe had very little interest entering the tobacco business which was shown in the way Poe had written countless verses on the backs of his father's ledger sheets. By 13, he had enough poems written to publish a book! However, his headmaster advised his father against letting him do it.

Be reminded that he was angry that his father hadn't given him enough money to attend college, so adding heartbreak to the mix equals increasing hostility between the two. Months after his lady love trouble, Poe decided he had enough and stormed out of his father's home declaring he would become a great poet and find adventure...

However, two years later at the age of 20, his adoptive mother passed away from tuberculosis leading Poe and his father to make amends for a while. They had gotten friendly enough for Poe's father to help get Poe into the United States Military Academy at West Point. This was not before Poe published another volume of poetry! Hooray! But his father remarried and didn't invite Poe to the ceremony while Poe was in West Point... not cool man. In retaliation, Poe wrote all the wrongs his father did to him in a letter and sent it while threatening his expellsion from West Point, which happened after only eight months of being there...

While with his aunt, his father passed, leaving Poe out of his will. However, at this time, one of Poe's short stories won a contest that allowed him to gain connections which would gain him an editorial position in a magazine! Within a year, Poe had helped make the magazine the most famous southern magazine with his stories and reviews. It was here that he gained his reputation of being a fearless and fearsome critic with harsh reviews. Eventually, at 27, his officially married his cousin Virginia who was 13...
