They faced much racism and hardship as they settled in the US.

Political machines were operations run in cities where the local government was starting to lose control of it's public services. Party bosses took over and offered incoming immigrants food, clothing, and shelter in exchange for their vote at the poles. The racism that incoming immigrants once faced was decreased significantly with the rise of political machines. They used their influence on the people to remain in control and get reelected using voting fraud in order to extort money from their constituents. Many Northeastern cities such as New York were  subjected to  political machines by bosses like Tammany Hall. Political machines in the NE provided support for immigrants by extorting money and encouraging voter fraud.
