I work for Hemel Hempstead FC as Head of Media so I have the rights and access to match footage and anything else media related. I commentated on one game myself and the other was by another member of my media team while so I emailed the club anyway to get permission to use this footage and commentary just to be double safe.

All match footage is accessible by myself and free to use due to my role at the club but I thought I'd email just to confirm with another member of the media team and club secretary that they're happy with it too.

Interviews will be done with Mark and Dan Jones from Hemel Hempstead Town FC.

I haven't had to email or anything because I already work at the club which means I know the pair well and see them at least twice a week so an in depth discussion about the project has taken place and they are happy to have a sit down chat on camera.

They're fully aware of what its being used for and they're happy to be filmed for the purpose of the doc. It's been explained that anything filmed won't go public so access to the dressing room and more honest interviews has been attained through this informed consent.

500 word reflection

This reflection will use Gibb’s reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1998) to analyse and review the production process of this documentary. The process involved me creating a documentary around the change of management at Hemel Hempstead Town Football Club by gathering a combination of B-roll and master interviews to create a compelling storyline for an audience. The new management were in desperate need of positive results to stop the team from being in relegation danger and for them to keep their jobs so the storylines appeared naturally rather than having to be manufactured. I sourced all interviews and footage from Hemel Hempstead Town since I am employed there and therefore it was easy to get strong access as I have built up a relationship with a lot of trust and respect with the Jones brothers and others within the club.

My feelings prior to the filming process were that this could potential be a relatively comfortable assignment to complete due to my relationship with those involved in the club. I felt as if my ability to interview the management from almost a friendship level rather than a professional level would help me get more open and honest interviews and therefore I was happy with myself for putting in the work to build these relationships because now they were starting to pay dividends.

To evaluate the process I was correct in my thinking that my rapport with those involved would help me get a higher quality of interview from the manager and assistant manager while my access within the club helped me get match footage and b-roll without any issues however I had not anticipated other issues that I ran in to. When beginning to film the interviews which was my final part of the filming process the bulk of the footage corrupted on my laptop and I lost a large amount of my filming. This left me feeling frustrated so in the final two weeks I had to purchase a new laptop and re-film a some of the interviews which went well as I could tailor my questions to suit the already recorded b-roll now.

My analysis would be that the key to the success of my documentary would be my access. Not only did my access allow me to get inside areas such as the dressing room it also helped me overcome the issues I did face. I do not think that without the access I acquired I would have been able to re record some of the interview at such short notice, I think my personal relationship with the participants helped this. The reason I encountered this problem was to do with a lack of preparation on my part, I attempted to move a lot of footage from one device to another and also change the format to MP4 which is why it crashed my laptop.

My conclusion and action plan would be that if I was to make a video documentary again I need to pay more attention to the technical aspects of the production process, if I had filmed in a different format I could have avoided the problems I ran in to. I will continue to build relationships with participants because this was proof of how much of a positive impact trust can have on a filmmaking process.

Reference

(Gibbs, 1988) 'Gibbs reflective cycle' [webpage accessed on 16/12/2021] available at https://www.ed.ac.uk/reflection/reflectors-toolkit/reflecting-on-experience/gibbs-reflective-cycle
