Having access to voice-to-text and captions is valuable for students learning different languages. These tools provide written representations of spoken words. Also, for students who can't read captions yet, having voice-to-text also accessible allows students to hear the words in the languages spoken to them out loud. This helps make language learning more inclusive for everyone. Nowadays, with technology and students having computers at school, Google offers both of these features. Even when using YouTube, it offers different language options and captions which I LOVE!!!

I think using closed captions whenever playing a video or even when at the front of the room speaking is a great practice. Use of CC's are also a well rounded inclusive practice because it can support students who may have a hearing impairment and/or difficulty focusing.

In linguistics cognates are words across languages that share a common root word. They often sound or look similar. I love this idea because English is full to the brim of borrowed words that have cognates in other languages! There are lots of obvious ones in the Germanic languages that english is close to. And many in the Romance languages english has borrowed heavily from. But we also share roots with West Asian languages and have borrowed words (especially for food and animals) from all over the place. By pointing these out we can show that the gap between languages isn't a huge as it seems

What I loved about this book is it let the ELL kids who spoke Arabic or Korean be an expert in pronunciation and several times volunteer to teach the class how to properly say the word. I love the idea of going beyond this to full dual language books, but this was an easier place for monolingual me to start.

Since my first placement had a high population of ELL students who spoke Mandarin, I would often hear the EA in the classroom give praise in Mandarin. I think this strategy is powerful because it sends the message to the student that their efforts are being noticed and their cultural background/language is celebrated and accepted within the learning space.

But, I think that Khan Academy could be an excellent tool for parents of ELL students who want to understand what their kids are learning. If they speak one of the offered languages and want to help their kids in Math (or another subject), but learnt it in a very different form, a teacher could let them know what areas on Khan the class is covering. And parents could teach themselves to understand and help their kids in their own language. Obviously the same could happen with ELL students

The dual language book is an excellent idea for ELL students and English as first language students to bond over a plot of a story despite a language divide; it is a great way to dismantle a language barrier. The idea of using electronics to narrate a book when the teacher/ students are not familiar with the language is excellent because it gives the correct dialogue from a native speaker. Alternatively, the ELL student can read the book in their language and not need to rely on electronics if they are confident with the literacy level.

Some of my research is on this and I find it super cool and related to this section. Many languages around the world are action based. But english is object based. In math this shows up when we talk about concepts. We describe something like a face of a square as a static thing that has no inherent motion. But, kids that think in an action based language have an extra layer of translation to do in their heads. To remove that the teacher can come up with ways in english to describe a thing like an action based language would. So a face of a square wouldn't be flat and square with four corners. Instead it is where the objects sits still, surrounded by four lines that come together at a 90' angle.

Applications like Binogi and Khan Academy having content in English and other languages is excellent because I think it gives ELL students to cross reference words/content in both languages, thereby giving them the opportunity to expand their vocabulary in English. I wonder if this might look like an ELL student having two chromebook screens open side to side to see the two languages lined up next to each other, such as duplicate content on Binogi.

So if I can connect with an ELL student with their classmates through the unification of song, I would feel so complete with them! If I feel unsure about the pronunciation first, I would likely play a translation of a song choice on Youtube (or introduce a children's song in ELL student's language) before tackling it myself. I think this would be a great opportunity of engaging as a co-learner with the students, because we can collectively look back on the process of hearing the song for the first time and mastering the song and its pronunciation over time. It is such a wonderful idea!
