Plantation System

“The Mower” created by Fabronius, Domonique C. in 1863 was used to condemn the copperheads of the north with their attempts to reconcile with the southern plantation owners, but it also can be representative of worldly opinions on the plantation system in the mid and early 1800’s. Besides the Native Americans and Southerners, the modern opinion on slavery was negative and highly scornful of the inhumanity it brought.

Mexican-American War

The title of the picture is “U.S. dragoons, cutting their way U.S. dragoons, cutting their way through a Mexican ambuscade.” The print shows American cavalry using swords and pistols to escape an ambush by Mexican soldiers during the Mexican War. The dragoons were organized 1833, and they were the only mounted troops in the United States. They were considered an elite fighting force trained to fight both on horseback and on foot.

Gold Rush

This image, taken by the New York Herald, on August 19, 1848, shows a few of the many people in California at the time. This was extremely early on in the Gold Rush with more and more people hearing about it due to sources like this. At the time, they were well into chaos, and California was full of types of different people who migrated to the West, in hopes of striking it rich. This was a few years before authority was ever formed and no one was fighting over the land.

Southern Secession

This picture features men, Keitt, Boyce, Chestnut, M’Queen, Ashmore, Hammond, Bonham, and Miles and was featured in an issue of Harper’s Weekly on December 22, 1860. It was created to let others know of the South Carolina Convention, which was the name of a meeting they held following Lincoln’s election. They were unhappy with the results of the election and feared what his presidency would mean for slavery so they held this meeting and decided to secede from the Union, becoming the first of the Confederate States.

Battle of Puebla

This picture was published in 1870 showing the War of Mexico with France. It pays the siege and capture of Puebla, Mexico, by the French in 1863. A poorly equipped force of Mexican troops had miraculously won the battle. The victory in Puebla galvanized the Mexican forces but turned out to be short-lived, and France later occupied the country after winning the second battle.

Sherman’s March

This photo taken by Barnard, George N. in 1864 depicts General Sherman and his men preparing in the trenches before the siege of Atlanta. This photo was taken moments before the city was razed, which in the war and sense of destroying southern moral makes sense, but in the context of Abraham Lincoln’s reunification plan as per his Gettysburg address, pillaging and looting a city full of fellow Americans was eventually frowned upon.
