In 1935, through the New Deal, workers finally got the right to unionize. It was described to protect commerce in America. It was also learned that the idea of wanting to unionize is also protected. An employer is not able to discriminate against you in any way for wanting to unionize, and even allows you to communicate with your coworkers to see what they believe about potentially unionizing. However, sadly discrimination is still portrayed in the workplace today in retaliation of union rumors. The National Labor Relations Board is a great place to go if you are ever wanting to research into making a union, or even taking the necessary steps to from a union.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 states employees must not be discriminated against for their: race, religion, national origin, color, sex. What this means, is employees are given the protection under the act, to not be terminated from their position, demoted, refused to hire, and refused a promotion, because of these qualifications. This was a huge step in protecting employees against discrimination, however, this act did not protect everything, leading to further acts and laws put into place in the future.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 was created as an amendment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act touches on the language used in the Civil Rights Act, more in particular on the terminology of 'because of sex'. This act makes pregnancy and child birth a right you cannot get fired for. This amendment was Title VII (7) in the Civil Rights Act. It protects the rights you have for: current and past pregnancies, medical conditions related to pregnancies, having or not having an abortion, and birth control. This act is very important in protecting women's rights in the workplace.
