De stad Napels werd in de 8e eeuw voor Christus gesticht door de Grieken. Zij noemden de stad Neapolis (nieuwe stad). Al snel was Neapolis één van de belangrijkste steden van het zuiden van Italië (wat toen Griekstalig was). Vesuvius betekent rook in het Oskisch, vandaar de naam. De vulkaan is 1281 meter hoog en heeft een doorsnede van 8 kilometer. De vulkaan is een stratovulkaan, dat houdt in dat hij bestaat uit lagen as en lava. Het Pompeï waar jij waarschijnlijk aan denkt, was ook de naam van een provinciestad met ongeveer 20.000 inwoners die bestond van de 7e eeuw voor Christus tot in de eerste eeuw na Christus. In deze stad zijn Osken, Samnieten, Grieken en Etrusken geweest. Ze lieten er allemaal hun sporen achter. Pompeï was bedekt met een laag as nadat het in 79 slachtoffer werd van  een uitbarsting van de Vesuvius.
