Arriving on a deserted island, Rainsford arrived at a palatial châteu, home to General Zaroff. "Rainsford's first impression was that the man was singularly handsome; his second was that there was an original, almost bizarre quality about the general's face. He was a tall man past middle age, for his hair was a vivid white, but his thick eyebrows and pointed military moustache were as black as the night from which Rainsford had come. His eyes, too, were black and very bright. He had high cheekbones, a sharp-cut nose, a spare, dark face, the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an aristocrat" (Connell 21).

Explanation on Quote #2

Quote #2 illustrates Rainsford's perspective on Zaroff as they have dinner together. For instance, Rainsford observes "the general studying him" (Connel 22). Rainsford notices that General Zaroff, despite showing hospitality, may hold hidden motives by the way he speculated his guest. The action of analyzing Rainsford was similar to how a hunter studies his prey. This further deepens his suspicions of Zaroff's obscure purpose.

Quote #1 shows that General Zaroff's features can show his position as a character in the story. Rainsford described him as having bizarre qualities; Zaroff's hair was white but his eyebrows and moustache were black. This quote displays that General Zaroff's qualities were unlike a normal person for the dark, black colors of his features that gave him an uncanny quality. His sharp features also gave him a foreboding aspect. Upon first impression, General Zaroff seemed odd to Rainsford and the offputting traits had Rainsford doubting the motives of General Zaroff.
