My next grade 5 unit covers opinion writing, reading arguments in reading and debating, and the Space Systems standards in NGSS where they are supporting arguments for gravity, apparent brightness of the sun, and finding patterns in shadows and constellations. I'm not at a PYP school, so there wasn't a central idea or anything for these. This is what I have so far:

Students will understand that:
  • People support arguments with evidence
  • People look for patterns and similarities/differences to help them make sense of the world around them.
  • People use models to enhance their understanding

Central Idea
People can use evidence found by looking for patterns, comparing and contrasting, and creating models to support their arguments.

We just finished learning about classification of living things. The focus was more on how animals have been classified rather than 'why', which is a knowledge-based approach rather than concept-based.
