Tom Misch has been a recent discovery of mine, but has quickly become my favourite artist and guitarist, and is having a huge influence on my evolving music taste, guitar playing and music production. His music incorporates groovy beats, mixed with jazz guitar, synths and keyboards, and funky bass lines. What makes Tom stand out to me is his guitar skill and knowledge of the instrument, plus how he combines his jazz influence on the guitar with electronic instrumentation and production, creating a very soulful yet modern sound. He produces all of his music himself in his bedroom. My own music is starting to reflect this, as I’m currently learning jazz guitar, and experimenting with electronic elements in my songs and productions, such as creating R&B style drum beats using midi and samples, virtual instruments, and synths/keyboards.

John Mayer has been one of biggest influences, and someone I look up to for years now. His music and who he is as a person has made such an impact on me. I feel somehow connected to him and when I listen to his music it makes me feel grounded. His music is soulful, his guitar playing is on another level, and his lyrics have such a deep meaning. In my own music and guitar playing, I have tried to emulate John, and have written songs with a similar style. He will always be one of my favourite artists of all time.

Jacob Collier is someone I’m learning more and more about. He is someone I really look up to musically though. A few things stand out to me with Jacob that I really respect. One is his amazing knowledge of music theory. Two is his understanding of how to create emotions within music, and what scales, chords etc to use make someone feel a certain way. And lastly, the deep passion he has for everything music. He lives and breathes music. I aspire to be like Jacob in these ways.

Misch has repeatedly cited J Dilla as one of his biggest influences and says he finds his music very soulful (Tom Misch - Beat Tape 2: In the Making, 2015). Misch got introduced to J Dilla’s music by his sister’s boyfriend when he was 15 years old, and from then on he was hooked (Last.fm, 2020) It was at this time he started studying music technology and producing beats in the style of Dilla. “I was obsessed with J Dilla” he said (Wong Notes Podcast, 2020). He’d then overlay these beats, with jazzy guitar chords. He’d go on to record, produce and release two albums, in which you can hear the heavy inspiration of J Dilla in his beatmaking.

Robert Glasper is another one of Tom Misch’s many influences. Tom has a love for jazz music and has listened to a lot of it which you can hear in his guitar playing. Robert along with artists such as Rory Hargrove and Cory Henry have provided the jazz influence for Tom (last.fm, 2020). “I love Robert Glasper,” Misch enthuses. “Listening to him changed the way I play guitar and the way I approach melodies and just jazz harmonies in general.” (Roberts, 2019)

In Tom's music, I can definitely hear D'Angelos's influence. D’Angelos music is very soulful, and has elements of R&B which is apparent in Tom’s work, especially in his 2017 song titled ‘Movie’. In ‘Movie’ the bass, drums and guitar play in a very similar way to D’Angelo’s song ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel)’. Talking about D’Angelos album ‘Voodoo’ released in 2000, Tom Misch said “This is probably one of my favourite albums ever”. (Tom Misch - What’s in My Bag?, 2018)

One of Mayer’s biggest and earliest influences was Stevie Ray Vaughan. When we was just 13 years old, a neighbour loaned him a cassette tape containing the music of Vaughan. From then on he was hooked and tried his best to emulate Stevie’s aggressive style of playing. Mayer has even said “I’m a Stevie Ray Vaughan wannabe” (berlinskimichal, 2007). To add to this, one of Mayer’s first electric guitar was a Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Model Stratocaster, and he also has Stevie’s initials tattooed on his arm! (Ze, 2019)

BB King is another one of Mayer's influences. Mayer’s song ‘Gravity’, opens with a lead line on the guitar, which is heavily inspired with BB King. To play this line, he uses the same scale shape, notes and bending used frequently by King. Mayer played on stage with BB King in 2006, where they traded licks, and during the performance admits he steals BB’s guitar licks (“BB King & John Mayer Live - Part 1,” 2009). John appeared again with BB on stage in 2012 at the Hollywood Bowl.

I can hear a ton of Hendrix’s influence in Mayer’s playing. They use the same chord shapes, and other techniques such as using the thumb to fret the low E string, and hammer on/pull offs. Mayer has covered Hendrix songs such as ‘Bold as Love’, ‘Wind Cries Mary’, ‘Wait Until Tomorrow’ and ‘Voodoo child’. John Mayer’s song ‘Another Kind of Green’ is a great example of how Mayer implements this Hendrix inspired techniques in his guitar playing (Another Kind of Green - Live at the House of Blues, Chicago, Illinois, September 22, 2005, 2005).

Jacob’s no.1 influence has to be Stevie Wonder. In countless interviews, he has mentioned Stevie Wonder as being a huge influence on him (Paste Magazine, 2019). His mum used to play him a huge collection of music, one being Stevie Wonder. Jacob was only 4 or 5 years old when he was first exposed to his music and has been an influence ever since (Orzeck, 2021). Jacob has even covered some of his songs such as ‘You and I’, ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing’ and more. Jacob says "The world of Stevie Wonder — in particular, the kind of overflowing joy that exists in every single thing I've ever heard him do, every note he sings — that is so deeply inspiring to me in every way’. (Paste Magazine, 2019) The direct words from Collier himself, he says “When I think of my primary building blocks as a human being; the people who shaped my very essence as a musician, there are few who I hold closer to my heart than Sting.

His creative output as a storyteller, singer, bassist and musical shapeshifter have inspired and sustained me since my earliest childhood days.” (Collier, 2020). Jacob would listen to albums by Sting while he was on his way to music school (Lewis, 2016).
