All I wanted to do was to get a cross section of people per each team e.g Researchers , Academics , Public and Patient contributors plus and ,most important people from diverse backgrounds and not necessarily ,people who may not have been part of any research group before . The teams who are not in competition will choose a topic preferably initiated by the person from the diverse background. The teams would discuss and devise a method whereby people can be included in the research and feel that they are pivitol to the research .The teams then get together to learn from each other.
It is important that the language is easily understood by all members of the teams. At the end of the day the idea of this group is to develop a template of how to develop inclusive groups.
I realise that this is my viewpoint and is simplistic but it is a point of discussion .

Before we stood on street corners listening to anyone who would talk with us for 5 minutes, local representatives had told us that residents would not engage with us unless they joined us because of our outsider status. But the majority of people stopped and spoke with us in the street.

In this particular project we concluded that being independent and not affiliated to any organisation was beneficial: we were able to speak to a wide range of people with different lifestyles and views.

Some told us how great the community centre was, others told us how it outpriced those on benefits and catered only for white British people.

We were able to listen to an ardent Conservative and members of the newly formed Residents Party battling against the Conservatives and the Labour/UKIP coalition.

We were able to listen to local drug users as well as those who lamented drug dealing and saw drug dealing and use as integral to the area's decline as a community space.

These conversations on the same day and at the same location with people from different walks of life and different views and values were made possible in part by our 'outsider' status. We were trusted as independent and impartial, able to respect and value whatever people wanted to share about their neighbourhood and the community therein.
Would this have been possible if we'd had community organisation representatives or local councillors by our sides?
