It is also recited daily in the obligatory prayers. We must do good deeds during our lifetime to ensure we can recite it before our death.

Performing the Salah Fardhu

It is compulsory for all Muslims to practice the 5 obligatory prayers daily. The 5 obligatory prayers are Subuh (performed in the early morning until dawn), Zuhr (performed in the afternoon), Asr (performed in the evening), Maghrib (performed during dusk) and Isha (performed during the night).

Paying the Zakat

Muslims must do the almsgiving during Ramadan to those in need. Islam prioritizes balance of wealth between Muslims which is why it is compulsory to perform this act of giving one's portion of wealth to those in need.

Fasting (Sawm)

All Muslims are required to retain themselves from drinking and eating and performing acts that can invalidate their Sawm. The main purpose of this act is to instill gratefulness in ourselves and bring us closer to Allah during Ramadhan.

Hajj

Muslims are required to perform this duty if they are financially and physically able to reach Mecca. This act reminds Muslims that everyone is equal and Allah is the Greatest.

In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:

"For the fasting person, there are two joys: the joy when breaking the fast, and the joy when meeting their Lord." (Muttafaq ‘alaih)

This hadith shows the special status of fasting. Though fasting can be challenging, it brings deep happiness, both in this life and the next.

Joy in This World

Fasting brings joy at iftar, not just because of food, but from the satisfaction of completing an act of worship for Allah. This happiness reflects sincere faith and the believer’s love for pleasing Allah.

However, true happiness isn’t found in worldly pleasures. The Qur'an reminds us that happiness from wealth or status alone can mislead people. Real joy comes from Allah’s guidance, mercy, and blessings, through the Qur’an, the Prophet’s teachings, and righteous deeds.

Joy in the Hereafter

The second and greater joy is when the believer meets Allah on the Day of Judgment. Those who fast with sincere faith and do righteous deeds will receive eternal rewards and will be admitted into Paradise. The greatest joy will be seeing Allah’s face which is a reward beyond all worldly pleasures.

Reflection:
Ramadhan is a time filled with Allah’s mercy and multiplied rewards. Let us welcome it with gratitude and fill it with good deeds. True happiness lies in pleasing Allah, both now and forever.

The significance of Zakah can be seen by the way it is mentioned 30 times alongside Salah in Quran.
