Often times ASD students have difficulty with sounds, so learning letter sounds, and therefore reading can become increasingly difficult.

Many children with ASD show a clear aversion to change. They may exhibit repetitive behaviours and require predictability in order to feel balanced. English is anything but predictable, therefore explaining why "was" and "gas" do not rhyme can be a difficult grasp to a child with autism.

Easyread is an app that allows students to practice their decoding skills. It can be downloaded to any device for easy on the go access. Trainertext makes the decoding of words predictable and Easyread’s short 15-minute lessons are comprised of repeated games and activities that also remain within this “safe zone” of predictability.

This would be useful to an ASD child as it tailors the reading to their level and provides support along the way.

Oz Phonics Skill is an app that starts one step at a time. It starts with matching games, animal sounds, not pictures. This skill is focusing on listening. Then it starts actual sounds of the English language and differentiating between letter sounds and pictures. Little by little it starts building into smaller words, and then more complex words.

I like this app as it starts of very simple and builds from there. A large part of educating a child with ASD is scaffolding and this app does it for you. As students learn to identify individual sounds students receive rewards and surprised in the game.

Accomplish Reading has been created to help users to improve their reading comprehension. After reading a number of sentences users are asked to agree or disagree as to whether the sentence makes sense. Clicking on the correct answer moves the user onto the next sentence however, if they get it wrong they are prompted to re-read the sentence and try again. The app also provides personalised feedback and progress reports for each of the users on the app.

I like this app because it helps kids improve the quality of their reading comprehension.
