Two days later the fort surrendered and no one was killed. This event was significant because it marked the official start of the civil war, the bloodiest conflict in americas history.

Antietam - September 17th, 1862

September 17th, 1862 was the bloodiest day in American history. Combined tally of 22,727 dead wounded or missing. The battle of Antietam was fought between confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Maryland, Maj, Gen. George B. McClellen of the union army. This event was significant because it was the bloodiest day of the war and in history.

Emancipation Proclamation -January 1st, 1863

President Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation on January 1st , 1863. As the nation neared its third year of bloody war. this proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states shall be free". This event is significant because is declared that the war for union became a war for freedom. it also strength-end the union both military and politically.

Gettysburg July 1st, 1863

Gettysburg was a battle fought between confederate forces in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Female fought on both sides of this battle. about 50,000 people were killed during this battle, most were killed during the second day of the battle. This event is significant because it ended confederate general Robert E. Lee's ambitious second quest to invade the north and it brought the war to a swift end.

Surrender at Appomattox -April 9, 1865

Lee decided to surrender his army from the war in order to prevent unnecessary destruction to the south. Confederate groups were paroled, and allowed to return to their homes while union solders are ordered to refrain from celebration or taunting. this event was important because it was a symbolic end to the civil war.

President Abraham Lincoln was attending a special performance at fords theater when he was abruptly shot. he was accompanied by his wife, Marry Todd Lincoln. this event was very significant that it is still frequently talked about today, a president was killed by an assassin shortly after the end of the civil war.

The red river campaign March 12th, 1864

Between march 10th and may 22nd that red river campaign was happening. it was one of the biggest military fiascos of the civil war, it began as combined union forces and river boats started moving up the red river in Louisiana. this event was significant because it was the last decisive confederate victory of the war.

Battle of the big black river bridge May 17th ,1863

After a defeat at champion hill, Pemberton formed a line at the crossing of the big black river in order to buy time for his army. many were killed and wounded even three men were missing. this event was significant because it sealed Vickbergs fate Pembertons army was now bottled up in the city.

Battle of cross keys June 8th , 1862

this battle that they called the twin battle of the cross keys and port republic. Jackson occupied key bridges to keep US generals Fremont and Shields from joining their armies. Jackson then defeated each general in turn before withdrawing to make his stand at Port Republic. this even was significant because it closed out stonewall jacksons 1862 valley campaign.

Champion hill May 16th , 1863

410 people were killed during this champion hill battle on May 16,1863 when Ulysses S. Grant defeated Confederate General John Pemberton at the Battle. The twin victories at Champion Hill and Big Black River the next day forced the Confederates into a doomed position inside the fortifications of Vicksburg. this event was significant because it was one of the largest of grant Vicksburg campaign.
