She joined the Sisters of Social Service, an international Roman Catholic religious congregation rooted in the Benedictine tradition, in 1964 and took her final vows in 1973, adopting the name "Simone."
In 1977, Campbell received the degree of Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis, School of Law, where she had been an editor of the UC Davis Law Review. In 1978 Campbell founded the Community Law Center in Oakland, California, which she served for the next 18 years as its lead attorney. She practiced family law and worked on the needs of the working poor of her county in Probate Court.

Campbell was first recruited to lead NETWORK in 2004 and continues to serve as its executive director. As a part of her work with NETWORK, Campbell wrote the "nuns' letter" supporting the reforms and asked leaders of women's religious orders to sign it. Sixty heads of religious orders and umbrella groups signed and the letter was sent to all members of Congress. The letter contributed to the momentum in favor of the legislation. Campbell attended the signing ceremony for the law and received a hug of gratitude from President Obama. Campbell led the Nuns on the Bus project, in which Campbell and a small group of religious sisters (commonly, "nuns") make tours on a dedicated bus to highlight social issues.

NETWORK believes that the federal budget is a moral document that sets the priorities of our nation.  Any budget proposal must prioritize human needs programs over Pentagon spending.

Healthcare
NETWORK believes that access to quality, affordable healthcare for all is a fundamental human right. Racial and economic disparities in healthcare should be eliminated.

Housing
NETWORK affirms that housing is a human right. Everyone should have access to safe, affordable housing.

Immigration
NETWORK believes that as people of faith and a nation of immigrants we are called to welcome the stranger. Immigrants should be welcomed into this country.

Income
NETWORK believes in the dignity of work and the right to meaningful work for all. National legislation should move from adjusting a minimum wage to creating a living wage.

Taxes
NETWORK believes that taxes are crucial to our success as a nation because they are the way our nation raises reasonable revenue for responsible programs. Any tax policy change should reduce the income gap, especially the racial and gender wealth gaps.

Voting and Democracy
NETWORK believes it is every citizen’s right and responsibility to participate in the political process. No individual or community should be disenfranchised by federal policy.

Women and Families
NETWORK advocates for policies that increase women’s economic opportunity, knowing this will result in progress for all. “The Vatican is accusing the largest organization of catholic nuns in America of falling out of line with church teachings -- while promoting ‘radical feminist themes’”

“The Vatican praised the nuns for "promoting social justice" but slams them for protesting church doctrine - on women's ordination and homosexuals. The Vatican also complains the nuns have been "silent" on issues like the right to life and abortion.”

Even though the nuns have received criticism for not following church teaching they have stayed true to their beliefs. Their goal is to bring a politics of inclusion to divided places and to change social divides in our country.
