On december 24th, approximately 2,000 Native Americans went up to Fort Phil Kearny, where the troops there could see them, the indians then brought out a small group to attack people collected lumber. Colonel Carrington ordered Colonel Fetterman to help the people with 80 soldiers, which then Crazy Horse brought out 10 decoys on horse, which Carrington fired at. The decoys started to run around frantically. After the wood cutters were into the fort, Fetterman went to chase after the decoys. The natives than ambushed Fetterman's troops, fired nearly 40,000 arrows at the troops. There were no survivors.

After the Sand Creek Massacre, the indians would take revenge on whites everywhere on the plains. The U.S. responded in places multiple forts along the plains the biggest being Fort Phil Kearny, where both Red Cloud and the Crazy Horse would then focus most their attacks onto the fort, often raiding supplies being brought to the fort. Along the many attacks Crazy Horse learned he could cause the soldiers to make a ambush if he got off his horse and acted defenceless. Both Crazy Horse and Red Cloud had the idea to which they could use this technique on a larger fleet of troops.
