Self-Awareness

What were some of the most significant things you learned about self-awareness in this class?

One of the lessons I gained is, I need to understand myself first. To love myself first. It is something that I've been struggling with for years. When I was younger, I was an overachiever. My grades were good, straight As. But now, I'm just a burnt out adult. The class made me realize that I have a low level of self-awareness. I genuinely don't know what I want to do after I graduate. I used to have ambitions but they went away as I grew up because I learned that "even though you're passionate about it, it doesn't mean you're talented enough to do it". You simply can't compete with talents. Till now, I have no idea what things I'm good at. Half of myself wants to disagree with the statement so badly but the other half knows that it's true. So I went with the true side. However, I do have one goal now; to become rich. I just want to be so rich that I don't have to look at the price tags when I'm buying things or feel guilty to buy something that isn't a necessity for myself.

The name of the video: How to build your confidence -- and spark it in others

Link of the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5ZESpOAolU

The name of the speaker: Brittany Packnett Cunningham

Speaker's experience/qualifications: She is an award-winning activist, educator, and writer. She was previously executive director for Teach for America in St. Louis, Missouri.

The video is about confidence, which does not come easy to everyone. The speaker recalled how she used to be a girl who lacked confidence until someone demonstrated what confidence was to her. A lack of confidence drags us down from the bottom and drags us up from the top. Without confidence, we become imprisoned. According to her message, building confidence involves three things: permission, community, and curiosity. Permission gives birth to confidence by observing it in others and letting others act as role models. Following that, the community nourishes it, providing the ideal setting in which to try to be confident repeatedly. Finally, curiosity validates it - Curiosity invites others to take ownership of their own learning while they are already vulnerable.

My favorite part of this video is when she explained about how awful she was at handling some of the large events, as well as her confrontation with her manager. I admire the manager's attitude; instead of condemning her for her blunders, she simply inquired, 'What was your intention?' I hope more people were like the manager. The question, according to the speaker, urged her to learn from her mistakes rather than destroying her fragile confidence. That left an impact on me because I did opposite. My delicate confidence was shattered when I made a mistake in one of my practical lessons during my diploma years. My instructor criticized me harshly in front of everyone, she even grabbed me by my collar and the moment completely traumatizes me. It still bring tears to my eyes whenever it flashes in my mind. I'm still punishing myself to this day for being so weak. However, the speaker stated that 'confidence requires permission to exist.' I believe I need to let things go and allow myself to regain my confidence back. I will try my best.

3 of your greatest personal qualities

I asked my mother about this because I wanted to know her impression about me plus she knows me since I was born so she can read me like a book. Therefore, these are my 3 greatest personal qualities:

1. A good listener
I would gladly offer myself whenever someone has a problem and needs a shoulder to cry on. Some things should be expressed in order to feel relieved. I am not a critical or judgmental person, and I do not like to criticise others, so I can provide a safe space for people to express their concerns.

2. Trustworthy
If I were given a trust, I would honour that trust because I believe that trust is a quality that every human being should possess. I also dislike telling stories about other people's secrets because it serves no purpose for me. If I am given a large responsibility, I must perform to the best of my ability.

3. Neat
This is reflected in my work. I prefer that my work be neat and well-organized. I will ensure that the quality of my work is satisfactory so that I and others are pleased with the results of my efforts.
