Research

Despite the minimal focus on problems, the first question in a therapeutic session allows for a general understanding of the client’s problem and context. These questions include:

1. What expectations does the client have from the session or the therapist?

This question enables the client to share the reasons for seeking therapy without delving deeply into the problem itself. It also allows the issue to be reframed into a workable goal for the therapeutic process.

2. How can today’s session be beneficial? / How can the therapist be helpful?

Similar to the first question, this helps identify the reason for seeking therapy and the client’s goals. It also fosters the development of a therapeutic alliance.

While SFBT does not focus on problems, sessions still provide an opportunity for the therapist to understand the general context and essence of the client’s concerns.

In therapeutic work and for research and clinical purposes, tools such as depression scale (PHQ-9), a brief description of complaints, and scales for assessing basic needs have been used. These tools offer additional insights into the client’s core complaints.

SFBT sessions do not involve extensive discussions about problems, past analysis, or finding methods to solve problems. Instead, they concentrate on the following factors:

1. Defining the client’s expectations.

2. Clarifying the client’s goals and desired future.

3. Identifying positive exceptions: Episodes in the client’s life where the problem could have arisen but did not.

4. Exploring coping mechanisms: Understanding what has worked and what has not.

5. Highlighting the client’s strengths and resources.

6. Creating a detailed vision of life without the problem or difficulty.

7. Scaling progress: Determining where the client currently stands and what their desired position on the scale is, as well as identifying signs of progress.

8. Assigning small tasks between sessions: Activities that help the client achieve and sustain progress.

I started as a coach in the business world, but quickly moved into special areas of experimentation. I've worked in education, talent management with students and teachers, athletes and sport teams, and for nine years I've been leading strength building programmes for students with dyslexia, autism and other challenges (blind, wheelchair, etc.).

For nine years, my most significant work has been the project called "Solution Focus in Reintegration”, where I work with incarcerated persons in individual and group settings and run SF-focused workshops for professionals in correctional facilities.

All attendees are expected to participate with their cameras and audio on. Anyone arriving after the small group supervision has started will not be admitted. To preserve confidentiality only the introduction and debrief sections of the session will be recorded.

This session will highlight how localization and adaptation of SF and PSS tools have strengthened youth participation, improved facilitation skills, and enhanced SRHR outcomes. By prioritizing participatory methods, we have enabled youth agency, helping adolescents and young people take active roles in decision-making and advocacy around SRHR services.

Participants will gain insights into our structured training models, community-based peer support systems, and interactive tools that have contributed to stronger youth-led solutions, mental health resilience, and increased accessibility of SRHR services.

The five-stage implementation process includes: defining the topic as desired outcome; establishing bipolar constructs distinguishing between desired/undesired conditions; incorporating elements representing different contexts; and using 1-10 ratings to assess self-perceptions across time and a follow up reassessment. Benefits include systematic tracking of changes, facilitating case comparisons, and accumulating research data. The approach helps clients’ articulate goals, identify resources, and recognize progress. Gesa is an experienced SF therapist, trainer and occupational therapist. For the past 17 years she has been working as a jobcoach at the department for adolescents with early onset psychosis of Amsterdam UMC. I’m a professional ‘guide on the side’. For many years I had adventures in training, coaching and facilitating people in organisations to think, create and work together better.

More recently I’ve deep-dived into menopause and this confusing season of shifting identity for women. I am a psychologist, a solution-focused therapist, and I’m passionate about making the world more neurodiversity-affirming. I spend a lot of my time helping people better understand and appreciate their uniquely-wired brains, so they can find strategies and tools that work for them.

As a therapist, I spend much more time asking about people’s hopes, strengths and what’s already working for them than I do listening for problems.

We will go through the steps of the guideline and explore how the SF approach and specific interventions can make it more practical and concrete.

The PFA guideline shared in the workshop is not only relevant in situations of emergency, but also helps professionals and lay people to support others in times of heightened levels of stress.

Mental disorders refer to the illness or abnormalities of mental activities such as perception, emotion and thinking caused by various reasons, resulting in obvious psychological distress or functional impairment such as social adaptation for patients. The disability rate of mental disorders is as high as 37.29%. Family therapy, cognitive psychotherapy and other methods are effective ways to prevent and improve mental disability. Affected by medical expenses, medical insurance and other factors, brief therapy has become the practice standard for psychotherapists.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) enables clients to establish changes in their lives in the shortest possible time. By encouraging clients to describe the future they desire, and listing in detail the skills and resources they already possess, it allows clients to decide how they should live and adapt themselves better to the society. Practice has shown that SFBT is suitable for different treatment stages of many patients with mental disorders, especially the rehabilitation period.

In Mexico, we are experiencing very difficult times, where we face daily situations that put us at risk of experiencing various acts of violence. Organized crime, such as drug trafficking and other offenses, has cities threatened with extortion, highway robberies, and violence between different drug cartels in various areas of the city, where we witness these events. Given this difficult situation, solution-focused therapy spaces are a very useful support for people dealing with trauma due to violence. In this talk, I will discuss how we use a solution-focused approach to therapeutic conversations in these circumstances.

Jesús Mendoza is a clinical psychologist and family therapist from Guanajuato, Mexico. He is the Director of the Solutions Focus Mexico Training Center, where he teaches the solutions-focused approach to colleagues in Mexico and Latin America. He is dedicated to private practice, consulting for schools and organizations, and is also an international instructor. He has trained in the solutions-focused approach by learning from leading global leaders and now conducts all his activities using this model.
