Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina García

The Cuban-American novelist describes a family history over 3 generations during the Cuban revolution. Overall, the family dynamics as well as different views on the revolution get combined with a mulitperspective narration. The general tone the book sets is very nostalgic. My favorite character is Pilar who returns to Cuba as a New York punk girl who has a great passion for art.

In this first volume of her seven books of autobiography, Maya Angelou beautifully evokes her childhood with her grandmother in the American south of the 1930s. Loving the world, she also knows its cruelty. As a Black woman she has known discrimination, violence and extreme poverty, but also hope, joy, achievement and celebration.
