1. People living in California are the ones involved in this topic.
2. My topic is located in California.
3. Poverty is important because it is constantly changing. There isn't just one reason as to why is occurs but multiple causes. One example could be the lack of basic necessities.
4. This research is important because there could be ways to find solutions and in the end help these people. It overall helps the community and ensures these people live a healthy life. It is important to find out the problems that arise with this and also to become aware of it.
5. I hope to learn more information on how to help the environment and if there's possible solutions to helping these people.

In this article, the author tries to bring awareness about what farmworkers in Primex Farms went through during the pandemic. A worker, Veronica Perez, tried to make a change and fight for basic rights. During the time she worked at Primex Farms, she and her coworkers would notice that people would get sick either from Covid or something else but they would not get sick pay. Instead, they still had to come back and work even if they didn’t feel good. The staff members and supervisors didn’t care if they were sick as long as they weren’t dead. A lot of problems were arising in this company and Perez wanted to do something to fight for their rights. She tried to get people to come together and protest for better working conditions and better wages. She was surprised by the number of workers that attended because many of them were immigrants. It’s not that common that immigrant workers protest because of their fear of losing their jobs but Perez was able to make it happen and influenced them greatly. As the protest started, and many other accusations were being made towards Primex, the more attention it brought. Primex then started taking more precautions and trying to clean up the working conditions. However, workers said that the conditions were still not good enough. They would not allow the workers to use masks, and if they did they would have to pay $8 for them. This was honestly an absurd thing, as contracting the virus is easy and masks should be provided for free. This whole situation with farmworkers led me to think about my family because of where my parents come from. Just thinking of what these families are going through because people are taking advantage of them knowing they don’t have many rights is just cruel. It’s sad to see these people struggle when all they want to do is work safely. They aren’t being treated respectfully nor given the proper working conditions. It does take a lot for them to take a stand and do what they think is right at the expense of losing their jobs. 

The technique that was used in this article would be pathos. This article made you feel emotional because of how real it is and how wrong these people are being treated. Perez knew a Primex employee, Maria Hortencia Lopez, who was taken off life support and stated, “I couldn’t believe that a person so full of life, such a happy and a good person, suddenly isn’t with you anymore.” She stated this as she found out the number of employees that were infected without their knowledge. She states how it all could have been prevented if they would have known sooner but the company kept the information from them. This statement helps prove her argument because it gets the audience to feel sympathy for these employees and to better understand their situation. 

The author is Julia Lurie who is a senior reporter at Mother Jones. She mainly covers topics of public health and the environment. She has won many awards and has a bachelor’s degree in political science. The information she provided is valuable because she already has experience with these topics as her degree is in political science. She works with public health and this article talks a bit about that. The information overall is part of a continuing conversation as this is still a problem today and farm workers are not given enough benefits. It is still occurring and not a lot of stands are being taken.

I found a smaller amount of resources, but not many of them were specific to my topic. Is it okay if there were only a couple of resources that were close enough?

My reading strategy was to read/scan from top to bottom. I read the title first and then the abstract. With the abstract you're able to know more about the article beforehand. Afterwards, you can scroll and look for headings and any images or tables.

What was difficult about the reading process?
Since these sources are credible and have data supporting it, it was sometimes hard when bigger words were being used. Some of them give a lot of information as well. But I think it was pretty easy to read and understand.

What helped?
The abstract helped a lot because without it, it would be somewhat hard to know what the source type is about.

What questions do you still have about reading?

She told me to mainly use the OneSearch box and how there are tabs that I could click on to search by subject. It helped to search by subject because it gives you everything for that topic. I was also able to search specific words to get me a narrower search as well. Overall, I think asking a librarian helps and I definitely recommend it to others to use.

The traditional narrative about my topic is that child poverty is bad and affects children's lives. A lot is not taken into account into what these children endure. They face financial problems, family problems, health issues, limited education, etc. It is not necessarily one specific thing. The public tends to look more at the financial side. The antithesis of my topic is that child poverty is not bad and doesn't affect children's lives.

Counter narrative:
My counter narrative is that child poverty affects children in multiple aspects. It is not only one but multiple factors that could be involved. People should focus on what these children are specifically struggling with and how they can help. People tend to think that people who are in poverty are in it because they went bankrupt or were financially unstable. From my research, I was able to see that it always isn't just that.

How this counter-narrative can help solve the problem you are writing about:
This can help because it will allow us to see how we can help these children. It will help us look at it from a different side than how the general public views child poverty. We aren't taking into account just one factor but multiple. I would like to thank everyone who is present and attending this funeral for my wonderful aunt, Karen. We lost her to a tragic accident but we want to remember her by her happiest moments and memories. Karen was my only aunt and she taught me many things in life. She taught me how to be compassionate, kind, and responsible. I learned many things from her and I want to be able to do the same for others. She was my biggest role model and I still look up to her till this day. I want to live my life how she taught me to be and be the woman who she said I could be. She gave many people life lessons and advice on how to bring themselves up and better their lives. She changed a lot of people’s lives just by being in them. I know a lot of people look up to her just as I do. She made everyone around her feel welcome and appreciated. I can’t express how much I will miss her and just how I wish I could hug her and have her tell me everything will be okay. 
I will miss you so much Aunt Karen and you will forever be in our hearts.
