When I was a music teacher at my last school, we always started the year with a PreK/Kinder program based on Nursery Rhymes and Finger Plays. Everyone wore their pajamas. After the kiddos performed, the students would gather around their teachers, and each teacher would read a story to the students, modeling to parents how to read to their children beyond just reading the words. We ended the night with milk and cookies. It made reading a fun thing, while empowering the parents to help their children. (Note- the kids below are not my kids...they are just some random children I do not know).

Have students bring "home" into the classroom. They can bring pictures taken at home and use it in the classroom and create stories. These can be shared with classmates. This will help validate the student's world in the classroom.

Like Hamel's article showed, by bringing in student's home life, you will build your classroom community. For example, the family who framed their son's article in the newspaper that thanked him for his discussion on his trip to India.

Getting family and community involved in the school is essential! Teachers need to make an effort to get parents engaged in the school. I really liked in the article how the teacher devoted substantial class time to allowing the student to tell the class about his trip to India. And getting the students family to bring their race car to show and teach the class. Showing that the student and their family is important.

I've heard of some teachers who have mystery readers come in (parents, community members, etc.). I've also heard of teachers who have parents write their child a letter when they are the Star Student for the week. Then, the parent comes in and reads the letter to the student. It's a great way to lift students, while making the parents feel welcome and part of the learning community to which their child belongs.

love love love this book, and there is a wonderful movie

The school I did my student teaching at had parent nights that we're specific to teaching parents about technology. There would be booths set up in the gym and the parents could learn and be assisted in setting up an email, learn how to access the teachers class website, how to access the grading website, how to translate websites from English to Spanish and learn techniques with helping their kids with homework and stuff like that. It made a lot of parents that weren't so computer savy feel more comfortable.
