Reverend Parris caught them and he thought something more was going on than them just dancing. Abigail lied to Parris and said that it was nothing else other than them messing around in the woods. Parris trusted her and told the others in the town nothing of it since Abigail was being so "truthful" with him. This song is all about trust and getting someone to believe in trusting you. Mary then comes home from town after she has been told not to leave. She tells Elizabeth that Abigail mentioned Elizabeth in court for witchcraft. Which John was alone for a moment in town with Abigail (they had an affair), which John wants nothing more to do with her. So Abigail then told John about her and the other girls dancing in the woods. Abigail has always been jealous of Elizabeth because Elizabeth had John.  So, since Abigail wanted  John all to herself, she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft  in front of the court and the town.This song about jealousy clearly is a great representation of the jealousy Abigail has. But when she got there the girls made her seem like she was a witch and that she was harming them. Mary later turned on Proctor because she wanted to still be okay with Abigail and the other girls. She did not want to be the outcast, so she told John one thing in private, but when she got out in public everything had completely changed courses

everyone acts different in private than they do in public around others. This song the writer is expressing how differently he acts in private vs. public, which can be very conflicting. Elizabeth forgives John for everything and and id glad he is the father of their unborn child. In the beginning in Act 1 Elizabeth was so cold towards John because of the affair he had with Abigail.  But Elizabeth finally forgives John for the wrong  he had done because he is about to be hanged. In this song he says if you can forgive and forget then love can truly live, which is exactly the case with John and Elizabeth. In The Crucible so many innocent people were hanged for something they had no legitimate proof of those doing the things they were accused of doing. To avoid getting hanged, many people in Salem confessed to a crime of witchcraft they did not commit. They were given no other option but to be hanged or confess to a crime they did not actually commit.
