In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, there is a scene in the middle of the book where weather evokes certain emotions in the main character. When the giver places his hands on Jonas’s back to transfer a memory of snow/sledding to him at first he feels nothing, but then suddenly feels exhilarating and happy do to the new memory. But once it’s over he realizes he can’t experience weather where he is and is disappointed and saddened. “Jonas frowned ‘I wish we has those things still. Just now and then.’ the old man smiled ‘so do I’ He said ‘but that choice is not ours.’(pg. 84, Lowry) This part of the novel shows that Jonas is disappointed in how his community is all the same and wishes is could be different. The overall mood of this scene is sad because the giver and Jonas want the community to be different and not stuck in “sameness” but they can’t fix it because nobody knows of these other things but them.

In the book there is a scene where Jonas is torn and doesn’t know what decision he wants or needs to make. This shows when Jonas finds out that release is actually when they kill people and doesn’t want to go home because his father takes part in doing it. He tells the giver he wants to experience and see color, feel emotions, and have weather without hiding it. He wants these things as well but can’t leave. They come up with a plan for Jonas to run away from the community so he can have these things but he wants the giver to go with him. “If he stayed, his life was no longer worth living…’Yes’ he told the giver. ‘I’ll do it. I think I can do it. I’ll try. Anyway. But I want you to come with me’” (pg.155 Lowry) This quote shows that Jonas strongly wants to leave but doesn’t think it’s fair for him to go without the giver coming with him because he knows about these things and wants to experience them with him but can’t do that in their community. This makes the mood feel gloomy and kind of tense because his emotions are conflicting with his decision and making it hard for him to do what he wants to without feeling guilty.

In The Giver there’s a part where group dynamics influence Jonas’s decision. This happens when Jonas discovers that Gabe a little boy he considers his brother and has helped raise will be released and that his father voted for this to happen to him. This pushes Jonas to go along with his and the giver’s plan and run away. “That night Jonas was forced to flee”(pg. 163) “He had stolen his father’s bicycle...but it was necessary because it has the child seat attached to the back. And he had taken Gabriel too.”(pg. 166, Lowry) These quotes show that Jonas’s final decision to leave was provoked by the Fact that Gabe would be released or necessarily murdered which he couldn’t let happen for he loved him, but nobody but the giver could understand that because they don’t know what love is. This scene holds a strong and powerful mood by showing how much love Jonas has towards Gabe and that he felted forced to flee because not saving him and leaving felt wrong.

In Gathering Blue there’s a scene in the beginning where backstory is an important part of the setting. This shows when KIra’s mom dies and she is now parentless so women in the village want to take her land and leave her for dead her for being supposedly useless. They go to court about it and her backstory plays a big part in their argument. “The girls should have been taken to the field at birth...she was imperfect and fatherless as well she should not have been kept” (pg.26, Lowry) This quote shows that Kira’s past is a big reason people want to kill her for land and feel that they have the right. This makes the mood of the town very tense because Kira must face all these people knowing what they want to do to her.

In Gathering Blue there's a scene where the mood changes based on where the characters are. This shows when Kira is walking to go meet Annabelle and the forest seems very creepy and makes her uncomfortable to the point where she feels the need to run. “Kira made her way down the forest path, for the first time she felt frightened”(pg.107) “‘A beast followed me on the path’...the panic was beginning to subside but she still felt tense.” This shows that the forest lets off an unsettling mood that makes Kira feel unsafe and like she needs to get away. This is significant because the mood of the forest being unsettling makes it difficult for Kira to want to go do her job safely.

I think that this image reflects on the setting and mood of my first book because the quote on it talks about regret and decision making. When Jonas and the giver come up with an idea for him to run away he considers his options and thinks of deciding not to go because it won't be fair to the giver. However when he discovers Gabe is going to be released or killed he knows that he has the power to take Gabe, save him, and run away. He knows that if he didn't do it then he's regret it because Gabe will be dead so his final decision is based on the fact that he will feel regret not making it.

I think this photo helps express the setting and how Jonas feels when the Giver gives him his first memory. This memory was of sledding in snow both of which they don't have in their community. In this image the kids seem to be very happy sledding down the hill which is how Jonas felt experiencing it for the first time
