Sumer is the earliest known ancient civilization. It emerged in the early Bronze Age. Sumer was founded in the Mesopotamia region. Their control lasted about 1000 years.

Iceman (3200 BC)

Iceman was found frozen in the ice near Tisenjoch on the border between Austria and Italy. He was covered in the ice and snow for about 5,300 years. He was a great discovery that helped scientists and anthropologists learn more about ancient ways.

Ancient Egypt (Around 3000 BC- 310)

Ancient Egypt was a civilization in northwest Africa. They ruled for a very long time. They are best known for making pyramids that weigh a ridiculous amount. Egypt is also where mummies were founded.

Stonehenge (About 2500 BC not certain though)

Stonehenge is a prehistoric structure of rocks in England. Stonehenge is very mysterious because nobody knows for sure how it got there. There has been many people who think they found the method of how it was made, but no one can 100% say they know how Stonehenge got there.

Teotihuacán (400 BC)

Teotihuacán was the largest and most important city of Pre-Aztec Central Mexico. The city had a population of around 200,000 people. This city had the Pyramid of the Sun in it. It burned around 75 AD.

The Mayans (1500 BC)

The Mayans were a group of people who practiced agriculture, built stone buildings and pyramids temples. They were big on architecture. They believed in human sacrifice and had a 18 month, 20 day calendar. The population reached 2 million people.

Uruk/Gilgamesh (Around 2100 BC)

There is a very famous story about an ancient hero named Gilgamesh. Uruk was the ancient city he lived in. The story about him is the oldest piece of literature ever found. The story follows the adventures of Gilgamesh and his sidekick Enkidu.

The Zapotec (500 BC)

The capital city was Monte Alban. The city was built on a mountain top, which shows they were skilled architects. They had a polytheistic religion. Amazing tombs were built to honor kings that had passed.

Nile River

The Nile River is one of the biggest pieces in ancient civilization history. It is known as the lifeline of the Egyptians. The Nile was also a major trade route. It is the longest river in the world.

The Olmec (Rubber People) 1400 BC

The Olmec were the first known civilization in Mesoamerica. Rubber trees were commonly grown where they lived, giving them the nickname "The Rubber People." Recognized for their colossal stone head sculptures. They played a game called “ballgame” that carried significant meaning, but historians didn't completely understand it.

Babylonian Empire (1895 BC- 539 BC)

The Babylonian Empire was founded by Hammurabi. It was located in Mesopotamia. The empire was created by conquering neighboring cities. Babylon was the capital city of the empire

Assyrian Empire (700 BC - 612 BC)

The Assyrian Empire conquered a lot of Mesopotamia in a short amount of time. They had great military tactics and weaponry. Ashurbanipal was the violent ruler for a while. The Assyrians were overthrown because of widespread civil unrest

Persian Empire (559 BC - 311 BC)

The Persian Empire was ruled by Cyrus the Great. They conquered most of the territory that the Assyrians and Babylonians once had. Conquered people served as government for the Persians. Communication was an important key to success for them.

Sparta (1600 BC - 100 BC)

Sparta was one of the big 2 in ancient Greece. It was a strict war-like society that was very military focused. Spartan boys began training at only 7 years old. Women were not allowed to be in the military.

Pompeii (800 BC- 79 AD)

Pompeii was a large city near what is now Campania. It was destroyed in 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted. The people who died were preserved because of the amount of debri.

Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC)

The Battle of Thermopylae was fought between the Greeks and the Persians. It is also known as the "Battle of the 300." The Greeks were led by the Spartan King Leonidas. The Persians were led by Xerxes.

Athens (3000 BC)

One of the world's oldest cities. They were known for having not as strong of a military, but a very strong navy. Held assemblies so people could voice their opinions and was the birthplace of democracy.

Jesus (1 BC - 35 AD)

Jesus was a Jewish rabbi. Christians believe he is the son of God. Jesus is also known as the Messiah. He birthed the Christian faith, and taught people the ways of Christianity.

Jesus's Death (Around 36 AD)

Jesus was brought to Roman authorities and sentenced to death. He was labeled a political rebel for calling himself the Messiah. Jesus was given 39 lashings, then had to wear a crown of thorns. He even had to carry his cross to his crucifixion site.

The Colosseum (600 AD)

The Colosseum was a large amphitheater that hosted events like gladiatorial games. It was in use for about four centuries. The games consisted of gladiators fighting animals, other people, etc. The gladiators were prisoners.

Frankish Empire (509 - 840)

The Frankish Empire ruled lots of Western Europe for about 330 years. They heavily promoted Christianity. Charlemagne was the most influential ruler they had. Charlemagne allied himself with the pope to keep a collapse from happening.

Greece (1600 BC - 100 BC)

Geography was crucial to the development of Greece. It greatly impacted their agriculture, trade, and ways of life. Much of their culture was based on epic poems. Examples would be the Iliad or the Odyssey, both written by Homer about Greek military battles.

The Byzantine Empire (330 - 1453)

The Byzantine Empire was ruled by Justinian for about 40 years. In that time period they took over almost the entire Roman Empire. Byzantine rulers were close to religion so people saw them as god-like. Justinian's Code was created, which was one of the first strong legal systems ever.

Islam Birth (610)

Islam is one of the most popular religions of all time. Islam was birthed in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Islamic people believe in 1 god, "Allah." Islamic people follow the 5 pillars of life, which are rules for their religion.

Julius Caesar (46 – 44 BC)

Julius Caesar rose to power through political shrewdness and military victory. He form the "First Triumvirate" with Crassus and Pompey. He declared himself dictator. He later got assassinated by the senate who wanted to return to a republic.

Christianity (1 AD)

A religion with the belief of one all powerful God. Believed that Jesus was the son of God who was sent to earth from heaven to save us from our sins. Practiced prayer, the golden rule, and kindness and peace to everyone. Symbolized by a cross.

Muhammad (571 - 632 AD)

Muhammad was born in Mecca. He was a religious teacher who claimed to have received revelations from God, also know as Allah for the Islamic people. The revelations one day became the Quran, the Islamic holy book.

The Crusades (1000s-14000s)

The Crusades were battles over the Holy Land, Jerusalem, between Christians and Muslims. There was a total of nine Crusades. The First Crusades were the only victory for the Christians.

Medieval Europe (400 - 1400 AD)

Also known as the Dark Ages, Medieval Europe was full of poverty. The Feudal system started and was developed out of the need for safety. They did this because after the Frankish Empire fell, they were in the risk of invasion. People were mainly farmers or poor people, called serfs. Then came the Knights. Next is Lords/Nobles. Lastly, the kings.

Joan of Arc (1412 AD- 1431 AD)

Joan of Arc was a French peasant women who became a military leader who lead French forces to many victories. She said that God spoke to her. She was killed by Inquisition. She became a martyr, someone who dies for a cause.
