Reflect on the video "Why we all need to practice emotional first aid". Why is this topic important for us as adults and/or for our learners. You can also add any additional links/videos or articles you find that might connect to self-care and emotional well being. We will be touching on this later this month as a part of our TLC.

Watching this video truly makes you sit back and think how important it is for us to take care of our emotional health and teach our learners how to take care of theirs as well. Turning those negative thoughts into positive ones can completely change your outlook on a situation. It won't happen overnight but if you are intentional about your thinking and really try to turn things around in your head it can truly help your emotional health and lower stress levels. This is also so important for our learners to recognize as well. As their educators we can teach them the power of positive thinking and what it can do to their emotional health as well.
-Kasey

I know that I am VERY guilty of not always treating myself the best emotionally- I am tough on myself, and often feel that I don't measure up. That is the perfectionist in me! It is a habit that must be stopped! If I have trouble as an adult managing these things, then I can only imagine how difficult and confusing it could be for my students. As an educator, I need to be mindful of my responses to classroom situations and offer strategies, or simply a warm hug, to protect my students self-esteem.
-Heather

I love what he says @ the end: "By taking action when you're lonely, by changing your response to failure, by protecting your self-esteem, by battling negative thinking, you won't just heal your psychological wounds, you won't just build emotional resilience, you'll THRIVE!" I think that's the key....all these words are ACTION words. Having emotional first aid is an intentional process that needs a plan of action...a procedure if you will...just like any other good "system" that we put into place!

I think sometimes adults assume that kids know how to process their emotions and express their feelings, but lots of times they need help learning how to wade through stressful waters and staying afloat. Teaching them about emotional hygiene includes having class conversations, discussing student conflict with them, and modeling appropriate self-talk and collaboration with them so they don't suffer from their psychological injuries without any help. -Marly

I love how we need to be aware of our emotional health just as much as our physical health. The idea that we should care for or put a bandaid on our emotional wounds is important for overall health. I think we are more aware and modeling more than ever to learners that failure is an avenue to learning and not a reason to get down on yourself. I had not thought as much about loneliness and rejection in the same way. Exploring and finding ways to deal with loneliness and/or rejection may help us to be able to model strategies for learners in the future.

The comparison between physical hygiene and wellness with emotional hygiene and wellness really put emotional wellbeing into perspective. I am guilty of brushing emotional hygiene to the side because it is not overt. It is alarming how loneliness increases the likelihood of death by 14%. The diseases that kills within may be harder to diagnose; however, it vital to have individuals practice psychological wellness. For my learners and myself, I am convicted to strengthen my growth mindset and prioritize psychological health, so that we grow to be resilient regardless of our constantly changing environment/situations.
-Rachel

I think the whole idea of taking care of your emotional hygiene just like you would your personal hygiene makes complete sense and puts into terms that are very understandable by adults and children. Like the speaker said, you would never ask someone to walk off a broken leg and we all brush our teeth, hair, etc. So why wouldn't we take the same short time to take care of our emotional health? At one point the author said "Don't convince yourself you can't succeed." I do a lot of lessons about self talk and avoiding negative statements like I can't with my GT learners. It is amazing to me the kinds of discussions we have when we broach this topic. Our learners struggle often with internal doubt. When the speaker was talking about how loneliness can be dangerous I immediately thought about our learners and how sometimes some of them seem so alone and lonely. I saw the other day that student council was brainstorming services projects and that the Buddy Bench was one of their ideas. This is such a great way to try and fight loneliness in our learners. Here is a link from a learner who started the buddy bench project at his school. http://buddybench.org/what-is-the-buddy-bench/
-Candace

I love the idea of Emotional Hygiene. Just like we do take care of ourselves physically everyday by watching what we eat and taking care of our outer appearances, why wouldn't we take care of our mental state? It makes total sense. The speaker talked about failure and how your mind handles it. He discussed the example of the 3 toddlers and how each of them approached failure differently and that the idea of failure is the reason people function below their potential. A single failure can convince them they can't succeed. We see that a lot in our learners. I think there is a need for constant discussion about failing and overcoming it, as well as positive thinking and taking care of their overall emotional well being.
-Ashley

Shake it off it's all in your head Loneliness creates a deep psychological wound. It makes us have a distorted our perceptions about the people around us. If you feel emotionally or socially disconnected to those around you. It can suppress your immune system, increase blood pressure. and cholesterol We need to prioritize our psychological health and practice emotional hygiene Loneliness isn't the only psychological wound that distorts our perception failure does that as well. As educators we need to be aware of the signs of of frustrations/ setbacks, feelings of rejection and loneliness in our students and have open conversations / discussions with our learners and teach they how to overcome and understand these feelings and emotions
Lisa

This is smart. Having watched so many friends and close relatives struggle with mental health, I am careful not to take my mental health for granted. That being said, it is just as important to actively protect it. To work at finding healthy ways to manage stress, anxiety, loneliness, and depression, because the mind is a slippery slope and falls so easily into unhealthy patterns when you arent consciously paying attention.

Talking about our emotions and sharing something as simple as how our day is going is imperative in the emotional stability of our students. This year I have learned just how much my moods and my emotions affect the emotions of my students. They are so perceptive! This video was a reminder of how important it is to model healthy discussions and healthy strategies to deal with our emotions for our learners. - Logan

It was so interesting to hear someone really break down emotional hygiene, and I loved the thought that we must learn to take care of ourselves in that way. My favorite part was the story about rejection and how you must be able to be kind to yourself and rebuild your self esteem. It's so hard not to fall into a negative rabbit hole sometimes; being able to stay positive, learn not to ruminate, and build ourselves up keeps us healthy and happy.

I love how this video talks about the importance of emotional hygiene. Sometimes, because of role as teacher and mother and wife, my own personal needs get pushed to the side as I focus on everyone else and not myself. This video helped me realize i need to put myself first sometimes and keep the positive thoughts going...

This is such a great reminder for the importance of emotional health, just like we take care of our physical health. We want our learners to become mindful of their emotions and to feel in control of the decisions they are making.

Students often bring emotions to the classroom from life outside of school. They might be dealing with a stressful situation at home, or had an argument with a friend. Students often may need support in cooling off and working through their emotions before they can be successful in class. We can provide that space for them to unload and share their feelings in a safe and supportive environment.
Megan

"Somewhere along the way a single failure, convinced them that they couldn't succeed and they believed it."

How disheartening is this fact? It saddens me because I know it's true. Failure is so difficult. Change can be just as difficult, if not more difficult. Both change and failure require a mind that is secure enough to know that change nor failure define who we are. Unfortunately, no matter what your age, it's not always easy to pick yourself back up again. Working on your emotional health is just as vital as your physical health. I think as women we forget to take care of ourselves, and what message is that sending to our learners at school or our children at home?

As educators, I think it is so important to just take a step back and breathe. If we are stressed and have anxiety, it will start to show and the learners will pick up on it and they in return will be stressed. We not only need to take care of ourself, but we have learners to take care of as well.

This was a great video to watch. Our jobs as teachers is to teach the whole child. Sometimes when I get frustrated, I have to remind myself of the examples I have to set to provide emotional support. Also, just like students bring emotions into the classroom, we do too. So it's important to find the things that can take our mind off it so that we don't affect the kiddos. Katie

I love how he talks about the disconnect between physical health and psychological health. How we are supposed to "get over" an emotional wound, but would seek treatment for a physical wound. At school as well, we would send a child to the nurse, but sometimes it's hard to remember that the psychological wounds that may seem petty can build up in our learners. When he discussed how loneliness kills people, it made me think of some of our children and their perception of rejection. Although their perception may seem silly (or is actually a cognitive distortion), to them it is reality. I think it's important that we take the time to hear their perception, but also education them on how perception does not have to equal reality. However, it requires us to be present with them and take the time to hear their concern and support them. I think it's also important that as educators we take the time to care for our own psychological well-being as it is difficult to help others when we are haven't taken care of ourselves.
-Kelly S.
