         <title>LA CORONA DEL RE GERONE</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br></div><div>Vitruvio, scrittore ed architetto romano, è una fra le fonti antiche che si occupa di Archimede. È un autore del I secolo d.C., quindi non particolarmente vicino agli eventi che narra. In un passo del <em>De Architectura</em>, ci racconta di come Archimede avrebbe risolto una questione di particolare delicatezza, che il Re Gerone II lo aveva pregato di valutare. Gerone aveva fatto fondere una quantità d’oro per ricavarne una corona. Il re nutriva però sospetti sull’onestà dell’orefice incaricato di tale compito: temeva infatti che l’artigiano avesse sottratto parte dell’oro e l’avesse rimpiazzato con materiale meno pregiato. Essendo la corona il simbolo del potere, essa era stata consacrata, quindi non sarebbe stato lecito sezionarla per verificare se il materiale impiegato dall’artigiano fosse stato davvero tutto oro oppure una lega. Come risolvere il problema, all’apparenza straordinariamente complicato? La tradizione ci invita a raffigurarci Archimede mentre sta facendo il bagno; e – assorto nei suo pensieri – nota che il suo corpo, immergendosi nell’acqua, causa l’uscita di una parte di liquido dai bordi del recipiente. Ecco l’idea geniale: Archimede prende la corona, la pesa, poi prende una quantità d’oro che abbia lo stesso peso e anche una quantità d’argento, ancora dello stesso peso.</div><div>Immerge prima la corona, poi l’oro, poi l’argento: constata quale sia il volume d’acqua che viene di volta in volta spostato. Valutando le differenti porzioni di liquido che ciascuno dei tre corpi fa uscire dal recipiente, capisce che per fabbricare la corona di Gerone, l’artigiano disonesto non ha usato solo oro, come richiesto dal Re, ma ha mischiato dell’argento, in una quantità tale da non poter essere valutata ad occhio nudo, ma che comunque non è sfuggita al genio di Archimede. L’aneddoto racconta un evento che non può essere accaduto davvero: supposto che la corona pesasse un chilo, e che l’orafo avesse sostituito il 30% dell’oro con l’argento, e che il recipiente fosse stato sufficientemente largo da accogliere la corona senza danneggiarla; allora il livello dell’acqua sarebbe salito di 0.41 millimetri, quantità certamente non rilevabile con gli strumenti a disposizione all’epoca di Archimede. Però, anche in presenza di questo riconoscimento postumo, quel che rimane è il genio che la narrazione fa emergere. Il metodo che Vitruvio descrive è una efficace sintesi, perfettamente compatibile con i reali sistemi che Archimede deve aver impiegato per risolvere le questioni alle quali si è applicato il suo genio: ridurre una difficoltà che appare insormontabile ad altri problemi la cui soluzione ci è invece nota.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>La prima misura di pressione atmosferica fu effettuata da Evangelista Torricelli nel 1644 con un dispositivo chiamato barometro a mercurio (figura 1.13). Esso è costituito da una bacinella contenente mercurio dentro cui viene immerso per capovolgimento un tubo, chiuso a un’estremità, anch’esso contenente mercurio. Se la misura viene effettuata a livello del mare e in condizioni atmosferiche normali, la colonna di mercurio nel tubo si attesta a un’altezza di 76 cm. La pressione esercitata dall’atmosfera sulla superficie del mercurio nella bacinella è capace quindi di tenere sollevata una colonna di mercurio di 76 cm, cioè di 760 mm di mercurio (mmHg). Si dice pertanto che la pressione di 1 atmosfera (atm) corrisponde a 760 mmHg. L’atmosfera come unità di misura della pressione non è ammessa dal SI ma è ancora in uso; per definizione essa corrisponde a 101 325 Pa.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> La seconda legge dice che: il segmento che congiunge un pianeta con il Sole percorre aree uguali in tempi uguali.Il segmento che congiunge il Sole con un pianeta è chiamato raggio vettore; via via che il pianeta si muove sull’orbita, il raggio vettore «spazza» nello stesso intervallo di tempo superfici che hanno la stessa area. Aree uguali corrispondono a tratti dell’orbita diversi: più corti quando il pianeta si trova in un punto dell’orbita lontano dal Sole e più lunghi quando il pianeta si trova in un punto dell’orbita vicino al Sole. Perché questi tratti dell’orbita diversi siano percorsi nello stesso intervallo di tempo bisogna dunque che il pianeta si muova a una velocità minore quando è distante dal Sole e a una velocità maggiore quando si trova più vicino.</div>]]></description>
