One of the greatest factors contributing to my identity is living in Antigua; as this 108 square miles changes, so do I. According to Antigua Nice (2012), "Antigua has a rich cultural heritage deeply rooted in a mixture of African Heritage melded with the influence of colonialism." Initially, the Antiguan culture was one where people used the ground as a source of livelihood so food selections were primarily those locally grown. This Christian society is filled with warm, friendly and hospitable people. Christianity has influenced many holidays and festivals. Celebrations such as carnival was a true reflection of emancipation which was seen in the style of dress and the types of songs; mainly benna and calypso. We pride in our love for cricket and local hand game like warri. Our many historical sites, where ruins still lie, tell a great story of our ancestors. The collage shows some features of what a true Antiguan culture reflects. These aspects hold true as being associated with Antigua.

However, the influence of the media, migration and globalization has greatly impacted the identity of Antigua. People argue that times have changed and associating with the above norms were said to be backwards. Due to this, there is a change in dress, food, values and norms, for example, franchised food (KFC, Subway) and holiday celebrations (Halloween). Yes, it is good to adapt and learn new ways but not at the cost of losing your identity. The country is moving away from the reverence for God and of sacred days. For example, just a few weeks ago Antigua’s carnival was launched during the heart of Lent. The carnival sub-cultural has somewhat proliferated the mainstream countries where festivals are now filled with Trinidadian soca, Brazilian style of mas troupes and fetes of all kinds.
Has the media influenced me as an individual? Although I do not take part in carnival festivals, I have seen a change in other areas of my life. Now, my style of dress and food choices are those outside of local norms. With the changes resulting from media influence I too may have drifted from the true Antiguan culture. Does this mean if I do not practice the things of the past, I am not a true Antiguan? On the contrary, in my opinion, lessons learnt are still embedded so the new influences are not enough to move me from knowing where my roots are. Another person however, may think that the 'Antigua now' is the 'true Antiguan' identity. It can probably be said that the 'Antigua then' was still under the ties of colonialism and now we are free to express how and who we are which is the true Antiguan identity.
