With my observations, I think that the place in the painting is not happening in America because of the palm trees behind.

I understand where Dorian is coming from when he says that this place is not in America, but from my experience I have seen places along the coast with palm trees. I believe this is somewhere along a coast because the house-looking building is very small, the overhead shelter looks like it has weaved hay/leaves of some sort in it, and because I cannot see a horizon in the distance.

I noticed there is a child in the distance and it appears to be a woman next to the child standing helping it do something. It could also be that the woman is doing something and the child is trying to help with that job.

The man cooking is cooking with a fire which could mean that ovens were not created yet, or that he is cooking a liquid of some sort.

It appears to me that there is a man (on the far right center) who is washing clothing. In the past women were the ones who usually did the household jobs.

this woman looks like she is makinng what ever is haning off the roof of the workplace. If you look twards the back of the picture you can see a woman and a child hannging up the iteam that the lady has made to the roof. Maybe the iteams are some kind of corn husks the people are letting dry?

In 4rth grade at saratoga elementary we took a class trip to learn about the Ohlone indians and as a project got to make tortillas. To make them we had to roll out the corn like this lady is doing. She is probably making some sort of bread iteam .

This workplace is most likly an outdoor kitchen. When houses where made of wood many people would seperate thier kitchen from the main building incase of a fire.

I agree with Katie that men did not wash clothes. This leads me to belive that the man in the corner of the top and bottom picure is not washing clothes but working some kind of board. He is probably making it smoother so he can use it to build some kind of shelter or useful tool.

I believe that this is a large scale workshop of some sort

because of the way the buildings in the background look

very nice but the buildings these people are working in are

not to great. I belive that these people are doing chores for

a much larger household or area

I agree with Katie because they usually didn't wash

or care much about hygiene So it might just be a tool that

is being used to do some kind or work.

I also belive due to the fires that it is about noon and
they are cooking lunch for not only themselves but
for other people as well. I belive this because it is a
huge pot holding the food and it could be used to
put somewhere else or to give to someone else.
