That astronaut's name was Yuri Gagarin. For the Soviet Union they knew that they were now going to be one step ahead of the US. This continued to create a competition because the US already knew that the Soviet Union had a head start. So they needed to work even harder to beat the Soviet Union. Other countries looked at the USSR as weak or less than the US. Another way is that the USSR wanted to beat the US in something to improve their reputation.  So other countries could look at them more powerfully. The US for example were able to do more things because of the satellites technology improving. Also spaceship designs have improved in many ways. For example the overall shape of a spaceship helped spaceships be more effective. Last but not least space travel and rover technology has improved so much.
