This creates an image of them, close to one another, no doubt intertwined in more ways than one, seeing as it is stated that they had an intimate relationship. There is one good example, "I tell of nights/ When I could taste the salt on his skin/ Salt of waves/ And of tears" (Vega 23-26). The purpose of this metaphor is to explain Odysseus' feelings via comparison. Calypso could "taste" the waves in his "sweat", or could feel that he wanted to go out to sea.
