This protest was intended to be nonviolent and draw attention to the harsh limitations placed on black voters - not everything went to plan. In 1965 Alabama, deadly violence broke out along the 54-mile route.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1962-1963 - Representatives of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee come to Selma and begin staging protests.<br>Jan. 2, 1965 - King begins his Selma campaign when about 700 African Americans show up for a meeting at Brown Chapel in defiance of the injunction.<br>Feb. 18, 1965 - A night march in Marion ends with a brutal attack. Dozens are injured; 26-year-old Jimmie Lee Jackson is shot by a state trooper.<br>Aug. 16, 1965 - President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act into law.<br>December 1965 - The three men charged withthe murder of James Reeb are acquitted.<br>August 1966 - The UUA installs a memorial to Jackson, Reeb, and Daniels in Brown Chapel. The UUA also buys a house for Jackson’s mother and establishes a fund for his family, using extra proceeds of more than $100,000 given in Reeb’s memory.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>
