There were many companies that were mistreating and underpaying workers as a result Chavez helped spread this information to others with protests and boycotts. As the text states, “Chávez began an international boycott (to join together in refusing to deal with an item, person, or company in an effort to change practices) of California table grapes. This boycott brought such pressure on local grape growers that most eventually signed with Chávez's union. The boycott ended in September 1970. Soon after this victory Chávez started another boycott, this time against lettuce growers who used nonunion labor. Chávez became the first man ever to organize a farm workers' union in California that obtained signed contracts from the agricultural industry.”   This text shows an example how Chavez was the leader of protests and boycotts that actually had successful outcome due to his leadership. He was inspired by other peaceful leaders which helped him achieve his goals by adopting their peaceful methods also. As the text states, “Cesar read a lot and was influenced by a number of other leaders including Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He wanted to help the migrant field workers of California and he thought he could do it in a peaceful manner.” This text shows that Chavez was inspired from other non-violent leaders and as a result chose to be a non-violent leader too. Some examples of non-violent methods that he did were protests, boycotts, and hunger strikes in order to achieve his goal. An altruist is a person that is unselfish and is concerned for others more than themselves and is willing to be devoted in helping others.
